I've heard that a battery could blow up, but never seen it happen.

Actually, I still have never seen it happen, but I now have seen the aftermath.

I have black pieces of plastic scattered across a 30' radius across the shop.

My dad had one blow up in his face many years ago. He was jump starting a car for a stranger in a mall parking lot and as soon as he touched the cables to his battery, it blew. There was a lot of snow on the ground, and he was able to wash the acid off and only had minor burns. Could have been very bad. He learned not to connect the ground clamp to the battery anymore.
When I had my service station, a customer's truck had one explode on the driveway. Sounded like a shotgun going off.

If you like that car wash it with a heavy baking soda/ soap mix . Especially the rim.

The acid spray from the burst has covered everything in the area.

The wrenches hung nearest the charging batteries rust twice as fast as other areas.

Its no mystery as to why.

The charger on that battery was only a 1.5 amp charger.

Those things are supposed to self regulate. Aren't they?

I'm worried about putting maintenance chargers on any of my vehicles over the winter now.

What do I do?

Did you have the caps off of the top while it was charging? That is a must when charging lead acid batteries....

Sometimes I charge a couple of dozen in a single day. I haven't taken a cap off in at least 20 years. Same with not putting them on concrete. That went out decades ago.

I don't think anyone takes the caps off when a battery is hooked to a trickle charger or battery maintainer.

Even still, why wouldn't the caps just pop off instead of blowing up the whole thing?

Is it safe for me to leave a trickle charger/maintainer on my motorcycle or sports car through the winter?

Back in my working days, hit the master key on a Cat excavator and KaBOOM, made my ears ring. Oh what a mess, glad I did not have the door open. Hope that was my first and LAST one. Mess you up in a hurry.

Had one blow on an antique tractor in the shop one night. Blew the seat cushion up off the tractor on onto the floor, and covered the whole back half of the tractor in battery acid, along with anything within 10 feet of it. We are still finding faded spots from acid spatter. This was 3 years ago.

Get a case of neutralizer and get busy. Hurry.

Ouch. Yeah I always remember "red dead" which means start with the dead battery and connect the red cable to the positive terminal on it, then connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal on the booster battery, then connect the negative clamp to the negative terminal on the booster car, then on the dead car clamp it on an unpainted metal surface.

I always sort of cringe watching people jump other's batteries. Hardly no one does it correctly. It's in the owner's manual.

If you pop the caps off prior to charging you can check the fluid level and ensure that the plates are not exposed, fluid level equal and add distilled water as needed - make sure the vents aren't plugged and then reinstall the caps loosely or firm your choice.

I blew mine up when jumping my old car as a teenager. Did not get hurt. And, a few years ago, I saw a guy blow one up in his face while jumping a car. He was SCREAMING with the acid in his eyes. I grabbed him and washed his eyes out best I could with what I had. (Beer). Got him pretty much OK, and sent him to the ER.

So what do I do about a trickle charger/maintainer on my stuff over the winter?
It's not a big deal, it's rare that a battery will explode. You can trickle charge everything over the winter with (most likely) no problems.

If they are good batteries, they won't gas excessively while charging. If you put a Maintainer on a battery and you can smell it charging, its probably no good.
Example: I went to replace some battery cables on a "Customer won't Start". One battery was 12.5, the other was 10.5. While removing/replacing cables I put the Charger on the low battery. Charger went to 40 amps then over 2 hours decayed to 10 amps stinking the whole time. Turned off the Charger, checked Voltage at 13.5, next morning the Voltage was back down to 10.5!
Customer had a used Battery that I knew had been sitting since May, it measured 12.5.

I don't get over here very often, but saw this thread and couldn't pass up sharing my experience.

I work on powersports stuff for my day job. Mostly ATV's, bikes, and side-by-sides. We used to sell/service Bad Boy MTV's (separate company from bad boy buggies which is owned by ez-go). They're now called "intimidator UTV". Anyway, the MTV I was messing with was a 48v electric. Eight 6v batteries, big ones-as I recall those batteries are about 75 lb each. So this guy brings one in and says it won't go. Very common complaint with electric carts. I hate them. Anyway, the state of charge "gauge" was showing "low" so I had him drop it off, we'd charge it overnight and then come back tomorrow & check it out. Fair enough he says. Pushed that heavy pile of trash into the shop, hooked the cord up to it, watched the charger and went home. Everything was going fine. Came in next morning, charger was "off" (it turns itself off when charge is complete). SOC indicator gauge says "full". Hmm. Well what's the problem? Guy said it wouldn't go. I climbed on, hit the throttle and it goes just fine, full power, full speed. Drove around the parking lot for about 30 minutes or so at varying speeds. Anyway, I was driving around and made a turn-at which time it lost all power, would barely pull itself. Nothing else unusual. SOC gauge says "1/2". Figured batteries were getting aged and probably time to replace them. Sat there for a minute, floored it, barely moves, and within a second a big kaboom. I was blown off of the seat, seat was broken off of it's mount, myself and the parking lot and the entire MTV was covered in battery acid, tons of smoke, some fire. I landed maybe 10 feet from the MTV, thankfully it was in a cold water-filled ditch which I used to wash the acid off of my face and head. Man it was cold. But at least I saved my eyesight.

Anyway by time I got it pulled back around to the shop, the cops show up wanting to know what the big boom was. Told them what happened, and asked who called it in. They said he had about 5 calls from different places-2 of them were about a mile away, said they heard an unusual explosion sound and they became concerned. That tell you anything?

One of the 4 under-seat batteries was completely black/charred. 6 others (2 under the bed, one under the nose, and the others under the seat) had all blown apart, completely. There was nothing left but lead plates and a bunch of acid. Washed what I could off and told the boss what happened, who called the owner.

To this day, I've not regained my hearing. About 50%. The accident happened about 5 years ago. I can no longer go out to the woods or the water and enjoy quiet because of the constant high pitched ring. I hate it.

What caused it? One of the 8 batteries (the black one) had an internal short apparently-or that's what the battery people (interstate) said, which overheated it-and ignited the hydrogen. What caused the others to bust? Dunno. They busted from inside out, not outside in as would be expected if a neighboring battery exploded.

What did I learn? Respect batteries-especially lead-acid. And I no longer work on electric carts, period. If that thing would've exploded inside the building, the whole back of the shop would have been damaged or destroyed, and I decided that we won't take that chance again.

Shouldn't be a problem using good trickle chargers on good batteries. The very clean ~10 year old battery that blew up makes me think there's more to this story.............................

I've been fortunate to never have a battery blow up and I've never been able to leave a battery charging while no one is around. The only exception is if it's outside in a safe area away from a building, but not overnight.

Doesn't take much acid to make it a life changing event; not the place to save money or time.

Ive witnessed 3 battery explosions. The first one was in my neighbors garage. He was charging a dead battery and had closed the doors. Next was a mechanic installing a new batterry. The top post terminal did not quite fit , so he gave it a tap with a hammer handle. The last was at autozone , the kid took an old battery off the tester and sorta let it drop the last couple inches as he set it on the ground.

Way back in my late teens I was a passenger in a friends VW bug off roading.
He drove over a rock that pushed the battery (sitting one a loose piece of plywood) into the back seat springs.
Boom! White cloud fills inside the car (cough cough).
That was an eye watering experience lol.

I had one blow up minutes into my fishing day. 3 batteries in series for a 36 volt trolling motor, one them blew up under load. I was standing on top the compartment when it blew was kinda scary then the smoke.steam coming out the compartment was disconcerting. Went home washed out the bilge good a few times and got all new batteries.

I had a Interstate battery blow up in my VW GTI .. was at Safeway, came back to the car, attempted to start the car and boom. Went down to Kragen and got a new battery and they charged for a core, Told the guy behind the counter battery blew up and he said "right". Brought the battery back in pieces (in a plastic tub) and got my money back for the core.

I've never had a battery blow up on me. What is confusing from all of these stories is that I believe that you have to have a bad battery and a source of ignition. That explains all the batteries that blow up when you make the final connection on a jump start on the negative post of the bad battery.
I really can't figure out why a battery would explode without a spark of some kind. The only thing I can figure is that a cable was loose enough to spark at the start of a heavy load. Otherwise, how can a battery blow without a spark?

Educate me.

I had one blow in my face, I likely have permanent hearing damage as a result and had tinnitus for about a week afterwards and some acid burns on my face and arms.

I was a tow truck operator and went out to a volvo where the battery was under the windshield cowl. I removed the cover and proceeded to clean it off with the canned battery cleaner, then I hooked up the cables. About all I can think is the customer was sitting in the car and as I hooked up the cables there was a spark and he turned the key on maybe. it exploded in my face and thank god I was wearing a hat and was looking down very hard as the bill deflected it some. The battery sides blew out and the casing on the top blew off. Sounded like a shotgun

The guy was a drunk and very rude to me. After the battery blew in my face the jackass still wanted me to tow his car. I washed my face off with a garden hose and then went home. I had burns on my face for a good 2-3 days and then it went away slowly over a few more days. After that day every car I jumpstarted I stood away from the battery when possible.

Nothing really funny about the battery that I know of. It came out of Grandad's hot rod - been sitting way to long as is usually the case with hot rods, and didn't seem to be charging this time, so I replaced it.

Decided, what the heck, and threw that trickle charger onto it to see if it would come back around. Left the shop for a week and came back to this.

I remember as a kid one blowing up on my old man. Damn near lost an eye. He wore a patch and looked like a pirate for at least a couple weeks. Can’t remeber the particulars but he was likely charging a battery and had a smoke hanging out of his mouth.

I witnessed a battery blowing up back in High School. A friends Chevy Monza wouldn't start - it would turn over but not catch. We had the hood open and the owner was cranking over the engine and kaboom!

Nobody was close enough to get splattered - thank God!

Cheers

I blew up one in the early 70's. It was a Sears plastic case battery, a fairly new product at the time. When jumping another car I accidentally reversed the cables (jumping pos grd Brit car) and the battery exploded in my face. A sharp chunk of the case sliced my face open and I was sprayed with acid. I ran in the house and jumped in the shower. The acid in the facial gash sure did hurt. My glasses shielded my eyes from the spray. I haven't made the same mistake since then.

My dad and I had an Econoline pickup. It was parked in his drive, and he went to start it one day in the winter and wouldn't start. So he tossed the battery charger on it. Dad forgot about it, and it was still on the next day. The battery exploded. No one was hurt, but the acid absolutely ruined everything inside. The battery sat behind the drivers seat.

In college... 1980... buddy's battery died... he jumped it from another car... made all connections directly to the batteries... last connection exploded in his face... only minor injuries but he was never "right" under an open hood again.

Good way to remember the order here... I did it wrong just a week or so ago and had a spark show!
