The seller doesn't seem like they know too much about Plomb tools. Just enough to be dangerous. They might know Plomb is popular among vintage tool collectors. But the discription...." I would guess this wrench was made at the time Proto purchased Plomb Tool co.". Since Plomb just changed its name to proto and was not bought out by proto leads me to believe about my above statement.

4" adjustable wrenches are very collectable and there is quite a following. They often sell for crazy money I like them but no way would I spend even $25 for that wrench.

Why would a snap-on 4" be worth that much? You could just buy a new one.
The wrench in the auction is a Plomb/Proto transitional only made in '48 and '49 which makes it pretty rare. I wouldn't give that much for it either, but if I had it I wouldn't sell it.

I was watching the $164.06 wrench when it was first listed for $9.99. Even asked the seller for additional pictures. Never dreamed someone would bid $164.06. I was interested because it had both names, which gave rise to the story about the lawsuit.

I wanted just 1 dual marked tool. Fortunately I bought an double open end wrench for $13.49 yesterday. A lot less then the 2 adjustable wrenches.

A few weeks ago I found a Plomb/Proto wrench to go with the ebay one. It was $1 or $2 - a lot cheaper than what I paid for the first one on ebay.

Today at the flea market I saw what looked like a Proto in a tool box. Very common to see Proto at the flea market. I was going to keep on walking but I saw he had a Walden. Guy kept telling me how great Proto was and pointed out other Proto stuff in the box. I finally picked up the Proto and saw it was also marked Plomb. $10. I also bought the Walden for $8.

Interesting about the Plomb/Proto stampings; I think on one of the Proto fan sites.... they discussed the transfer of the Plomb to the Proto stampings! Took some time to get it all over and the lawsuit forced the issue!

If you are into history, then Plomb has an interesting one.

Alphonse started his company in 1907, but could not register the name because Plumb (the hammer company) was already in business.

Alphonse left around 1916-1917 to start a second company. A. Plomb Tool Company. Tools were marked A. Plomb. His second company was sold to California Tool Company in 1927, which marked tools Calif-Tools, but sometimes also had A. Plomb on them.

Plumb sued Plomb in 1946. It has been said because Plomb came out with a hammer. If this is true I would like to know what kind of hammer, because Plomb had hammers for a long time, but they may have been just body hammers. The Stanley-Proto site says it was a ball peen hammer.

So Plomb started to change its name 1948-1949 to Proto. That is why the dual marked tools are hard to find, since production was only a short time.

I would love to get one of these boxes but they are too expensive.

I know 1" drive stuff would be high, and Plombs quality is great, but that is a lot of coin for tools that old to me, regardless the brand. I just do not see it.

There isn't any 1" Plomb in the collection (or any brand 1" drive sockets, etc., except for a couple of ratchets). Same seller sold the matching 1" Drive Plomb tool box also, same auction winner:
