It started out so harmless. Drill press light didnt work since I got it.
Took a pic of the socket and looks like the contact tab is missing.
I probed it with my non contact pen and it says its getting juice when switch is on.
So next step was to remove the socket and repair.
2 bolts that hold socket in are trapped under the belt guard.
OK simple just remove belt guard.....
2 screws are under the driven pulley.
I took the nut off shaft and put some pressure on the pulley while tapping on the shaft.
No go...
Diecast pulley will break if you look at it funny so wondering if its on a tapered shaft and splined or keyed.
My large gear puller is somewhere else right now, probably just as well as it could break the pulley.
How does this pulley come off?

I had a look at my press. it's been a while since I replaced the socket.
and....
I drilled the belt guard at the screw locations to get the bracket screws out , then used longer washer head screws to screw the new bracket ( that I made ) to hold it in place
I do remember that I had the switches out too, probably to make some room to get at things .

You are correct for assuming the driven pulley is on a tapered shaft. I used my two jaw puller to put a little pull on the driven pulley. I then tapped the puller drive screw with a hammer. The driven pulley jumped off. This pulley is on what I thought looked like a Jacob's Taper.

Be very careful with a puller. Those import gray cast iron pulleys are about a frigile as Pringles chips.

lamp assembly is out, without removing the pulley
now to find and fabricate a new socket.
The one Cobbler mentions shows promise, just wonder how it holds up to vibrations

I would toss that lamp assembly in the trash can and look for a LED work light.

I bought a 12" LED strip light I am going to mount back near the column on my drill press. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems bright enough. I am hoping to have a light I don't need to adjust all the time and it out of the way.

done
made a bracket and attached the new socket to it.
Had to turn down the heads of a couple 8/32s to fit in the ceramic socket.
LED is a spot so its right where the light is needed
thanks for the tip Cobbler
