So this is my official first post about my shop. I will test adding photos. We'll see how it goes. It's 40x48x12 with a 15x48 loft upstairs. When people ask me what I plan to do with it all I can say is "mess around". The 3 car garage has been taken over by big wheels and bikes. The shop will have a 2 post lift. There will be a half bath upstairs and hopefully a shuffle board. They will finish framing this week and pour the floor. I want to have it done by Thanksgiving.580.jpg

Man, that thing is going to be nice.

Are you going to be able to get a shuffle board table upstairs ? Does it need to go in the open end wall before construction is finished ?

I have a friend that built one very similar to yours. He put in a double barn door style doors at the front of the upstairs gable.

Its a large opening for large things to go upstairs, pool table, pinball machine, Foosball table. Everything was lifted up there with a rented lift truck.

Looking forward to seeing you finish it!

Thanks for the replies. I have 2 more pictures to post the progress today. It looks more like the finished product structurally. I checked on the shuffleboard today. It should slide through the loft window at the back of the shop. Granted it will take a lift to handle it (1000lb). When I spoke to the salesman he said it would take 4 weeks to get it in stock. The building will hopefully be done by then! It's not something I need today but down the road I would like to get one.

A loft door would be a good thing to have. I just don't know how much I would use it. I'd like to seal up the walls as much as possible. I will however have barn doors covering the garage doors. I'd like to stain the barn doors and just have flat insulated garage doors behind them. It's going to be the only rustic touch on the exterior. The vinyl windows and cement board siding will give it away as a modern structure.

So here is two more pictures. The exterior should really come together in the next two weeks.

Looking good...luckily I have a farm to protect me from the "whatcha gonna do with that?" questions which I so richly deserve.

Okay so I got lost in the process of building this barn and I have not posted in a LONG while. A brief description would be chaos! I just got the final inspection at the end of May. It is now July and I happened to have it cleaned up so I thought I would take some pictures. I'll try and load them in some sort of logical order. Like outside pictures...

Finally

This project was really a struggle for me. The general contractor is a friend of mine and it really has kind of ruined my relationship with him. This job was really not a priority for him and the timetable showed it. Ultimately I toolk it upon myself to finish the few things up and get the final inspection. It took all winter to just get it closed in and the power wasn't permenant until April. I really just lost an entire winter of using the warmth of the shop.

That is all behind me now. I just needed some room to spread out. After it was finished I realized how very llittle time I have to work on stuff. Three young children can sap free time. But as you can see I have a trailer torn apart and will be working on brakes and bearings when they arrive later in the week.

The lift has been very helpful. I have used it a little for car stuff but I was able to rig up some steel for the tractor and mower. Now I can clean under the deck without getting all of that stuff in my face!

Thanks for checking this page out. I'm just glad to be able to show it off. I thought it was never going to be done. I'm sure you can all relate.

About the doors

After I went upstairs I remembered that I didn't comment on the overhead doors. In fact I am still going to cover those with barn doors. I didn't like those faux designs that get put on garage doors as they don't really look like barn doors. To this point I have had a difficult time finding someone to build these doors. I guess I need a professional barn builder because the local contractors are chicken.

The doors don't really even need to be that nice. I just want cedar that can be stained with a simple design. They don't need to seal. There are insulated garage doors behind them to keep the elements out. The design I have currently landed on is ome kind of a steel frame holding the cedar inside so they won't sag or warp. More to come on that.

So no, I didn't build this giant barn with huge doors only to leave them white. In fact I have no Idea why the painter didn't paint them while he was spraying the trim. For right now I'm just happy to an enclosed space.
