It's finally Finished, another Devoe Floor

Here are picks of my garage floor project. Devoe Devran 224HS and Devthane 379UVA. I am really happy with the results.

1. Take more time dispensing the flakes, use small amounts and throw higher.
2. I made my own spikes (see pic below) with straps (twine) ..... the straps didn't work .... duct tape to the rescue.
3. I think I could have gotten away with using just 2 kits of Devran 224HS.
4. Be more careful with the second coat. Missed three spots but didn't know it until I stiff-brushed the flakes; all the flakes came off. Had to mix a small batch and use a small roller to fix it up. All came out OK.

The area is just under 400 ft2.

The cost was as follows

- Cement Paint for the Stem Walls ........ 20.00
- Devran 224HS Epoxy (3) ................... 209.19
- Devran Converter (3) ....................... 178.89
- Devthane 379UVA (1) ....................... 104.75
- Professional Respirator ...................... 34.02
- Xylene (1) ...................................... 13.09
- Rollers, tray liners, containers ............. 24.00
- Seal Krete Clean-N-Etch (2)................ 30.00

TOTAL ---> $583.95

Can you walk us through the process. How long did it take, what all was involved in laying it down. Thanks.

1. Scraped (by hand) the floor of all paint drips, concrete blobs, etc.
2. Patched all cracks and gauges.
waited 2 days to let the patching stuff dry.
3. Washed with detergent and rinsed, rinsed, rinsed.
4. Etched with Seal Krete Clean-N-Etch and rinsed, rinsed, rinsed.
waited 3 days for floor to completely dry.
5. Vacuumed the floor with shop vac and Hoover.
6. Applied first coat of Devran 224HS (did not thin).
7. Next day applied the second coat of epoxy.
8. Applied the flakes immediately after second coat completed.
floor sat for 2 days.
9. Brushed off the loose flakes and discovered I missed some spots,
had to mix a little batch and touch-up with epoxy and flakes.
waited one day.
10. applied the Devthane clear-coat.

What started the floor project was the fact that I lost a bet with my wife and had to paint the garage and all the cabinets. Now that it's done, I think a new easy chair and HD TV is what is needed, the heck with parking the cars in it.

Your right .... does feel good on the bare feet .... I hate to put down my old mats .... Now when I pull something out to do a task, I put it back when I'm done and cleanup immediately so as to keep that showroom look. My wife loves that !!!! Haven't had the cars in yet !

What are the spikes for?

Spikes allow you to walk on wet epoxy to dispurse the flakes etc without marring the finish. If you were to just walk on it with flat bottom shoes or boots it would pull up and ruin the finish in those areas.

It is best to stay off it with or without spikes, but in some cases there is no other option.

I purchaded the product from my local ICI Paint store.

I noticed that you didn't actually use Devoe 379UVA, It's 379H as shown in the pic. I'm having this same problem. Apparently because of the VOC content they don't sell the 379UVA in california anymore (and probably not in your state). The ICI guys have been telling me that Devoe has had to change their formulas a bunch of times in the past few years. The datasheets for the UVA & H are pretty much identical, both say contains ultraviolet light absorber. I wonder if the 379H is a good protecting against UV as the UVA?

Wow .... I never noticed that it wasn't the UVA stuff, and now the local ICI paint store closed. So far the floor still looks new. It's getting thru it's first winter.

I am looking for a paint for my new garage floor and have heard about the Devoe paint. It's nice to hear positive comments about it from someone who isn't trying to sell it to me.
