Re: It's finally my turn !

Adding a truckload of gravel & compacting to raise the grade for a final floor thickness of 5". Perimeter will be 10". Underneath there is already 12" of compacted gravel which was laid down last year.

Re: It's finally my turn !

Do you dig any trenches for footers? Couldn't that slab slide around when it's done? And yes, I don't know anything at all about concrete.

There will be about 60 tons of compacted gravel underneath, and the slab itself will weigh probably another 15 tons or so...

It ain't gonna go anywhere !

Nope. The garage will be heated all the time, so the ground underneath shouldn't freeze, and with all the reinforcement + thickness of base & concrete, I think I'll be OK.

Plus I don't like it when the steel wheels of my jacks or my creeper go clunk-clunk over relief joints... :bounce:

Re: It's finally my turn !

Wow, what hot day today to be putting up framing ! With the humidity factored in, it was about 100* out there today... I think I lost 10 lbs in sweat !

Nevertheless, good progress was made !

I originally wanted to pick up my lumber yesterday afternoon, and did indeed pick up the low volume pieces, but just had to wait until this morning for the high volume and total dollars because the local lumberyard was having 20% off sale! In theory the rebate only applied to one item, but my pick-up can only carry so much you see, so ended up going twice with my Dad, 1 bill in my name, 1 bill in his name each time.

My aspenite (waferboard I think) came to $6.32 per sheet, my 2x4x10's came to $2.12 a piece, my 1x3x10 strapping came to $1.00 per piece, and my framing nailer came to $79.

What a joy a framing nailer is ! Will never build again without one !

The bad part is that we lost about 3 hrs of daylight going back & forth to the lumberyard, so instead of the 6 wall sections I had planned on doing today, only got 4 done. With the heat just wearing me down, I made 2 small mistakes in my framing. both are easily fixed, but will chew up some time tomorrow...

Forgot to install my hurricane brace in the rearmost section of the long wall, and forgot make the pocket to seat my 2x12's above the pop-out on the last wall... just too hot and ran out of brain gas I guess... that and my son 'helping me' by asking 20,000 questions...but I am glad he's helping out and learning !

Tomorrow the plan is to frame out the remaining walls and install the top plate doubler, then install the aspenite and tyvek on monday. I know it would be alot quicker to have done that on the ground, but I am trying to take it easy on my Dad, and looking back, it would make the error repairs harder rather than easier...

Here are some pics taken by my wife during the day.

One thing for sure, that Pabst Blue Ribbon I had after supper was darn good !

Re: It's finally my turn !

Well, another eff'n hot day to be working on top of a concrete slab, morning and afternoon thunderstorms hindered our progress quite a bit as well.

I sweated (literally) the details of my main pop-out wall with the window, because I didn't want any mistakes on this one... it turned out perfect! Also added another short pop-out wall and fixed my column where the 2x12 header will go above the pop-out alcove.

Tomorrow, we start with the short man-door wall, and then the garage door wall. Again, I plan on taking my time doing the layout flat on the slab before driving home any nails...all the lumber yards are closed on monday, so no screw-ups allowed !

Here are a few pics from today:

Re: It's finally my turn !

In some of the pics, you can see my new little Husky air compressor I picked up at Home Depot on Thursday evening. I saw it advertised on-line at a regular price of only $99 !

Checked store inventory online as well, the closest store that had one (they had only 4 left as a matter of fact) was 40 minutes away...but well worth it...I had been shopping for a while, and similar ones at other stores were about $200.

With an 8 gallon capacity, it has penty of air to run my nail gun without pumping up every third shot... while not as manouverable as a smaller pancake type compressor, I offset that by getting a 50' hose, so I can go everywhere on the jobsite without rolling the compressor around.

I really like the fact that it is oiled rather than oil-less, should make it last a nice long time... my Dad already says he wants to by it after we're done... we'll see... he just might get it for free !

Re: It's finally my turn !

Well today turned out to be quite cooler & breezier, which was nice; but also brought drizzles pretty much the entire day... we did manage to get the rest of the wall framing done, and no screw-ups !

My wood calculations turned out to be just a little bit shy, would have needed 10 more 2x4's to put the top plate doubler on all the way around... it will just have to wait until I get back from moose hunting.

Here are today's pics courtesy of my wife:

Very nice build! That's going to be an epic shop when you're all done. Having done a little construction work, I'll never frame anything without a nailgun!

I've found that 16' wide is certainly adequate to walk around a truck…only 20' of depth makes it trickier.

Thanks fellow Washingtonian! (I lived in Covington WA in the mid 90's when I worked for Kenworth). Not too sure about "epic" compared to some others on this forum, but it will be to my liking & affordability for now. It's also as big as I can go on the lot that I got !

Re: It's finally my turn !

Today's update...decided to order my 16 roof trusses pre-made rather than build them myself... talk about sticker shock!

It would have taken me probably a weekend to build them myself, then another weekend to raise them and sheath the roof, but as my dear wife reminded me, I am going away moose hunting the entire week of Sept 12th, and again the week of October 3rd...

So I decided to order them, thus saving me a precious weekend of fall building weather. They will arrive on either the 22nd or the 23rd, which will leave me the weekend of the 17th to add the top plate doubler, sheath the walls and install the tyvek.

Price delivered to my yard, tax included $700.00 and I shopped around a lot. best price by over 10%, and local supplier too. Have decided to forego the scissor trusses ($300 extra bucks) as will probably not be adding a lift next year anyway, and when I do it will either be a MaxJax or a 4 poster, so my 10' walls will be adequate.

It's not easy to balance what I want vs what I need vs what my budget will allow ! (and I am being very strict with my budget...)

Nice build! It will feel nice when you get the roof up and walls covered and you can start to leave stuff inside out of the weather.

Good luck on the moose trip. What area are you hunting?

Thanks DMax (my Dad has an '02 LB7), I am going to Clova both times, next week is the last week for bow season (and best time of the rut and nobody else in the area) and back in October for rifle season (when the younger bucks run around trying to get in on the action but a lot more hunters in the woods).

Re: It's finally my turn !

Well, got back late yesterday from my week of moose bowhunting near Clova, QC. Close but no cigar this year. Had some action every day, but none that got close enough to let loose a bolt from my crossbow.

Good news is I get a long distance mulligan in 2 weeks when I go back for rifle season.

Got some work done on the garage today as well, installed the top plate doubler, and also made my catwalks along both long side walls to facilitate installation of the trusses, topmost nailing of OSB sheathing, stapling of tyvek and nailing of furring strips.

No pics of that today, will try to get some posted tomorrow.

EDIT: Pics added.

Re: It's finally my turn !

Quite a busy weekend on the project once again...the roof trusses were delivered on friday morning, friday afternoon I moved them all onto the slab floor and marked each one for proper overhang.

Despite having come down with a wicked cold, on Saturday I started putting up the first row of OSB sheathing, and installed the end trusses alone because I couldn't wait to see the effect on the roofline. I am finally happy with my decision to go on a 4/12 pitch rather than 6/12...it's pretty tall but looks OK behind the 2 story section of the house.

On Sunday my Dad & Brother-in-Law came over to help with the rest of the trusses, sheathing, tyvek and furring strips. Only managed to get about 15% of the strapping installed before calling Miller Time at 5pm on Sunday. I really sweated out the rest of my cold on Sunday! The dip in the pool afterwards was good too!

No work on the project this coming weekend, as I am off moose hunting again for another week (rifle season).

Here are the most recent pics:

Re: It's finally my turn !

Howdy All;

Well, got back from my second week of moose hunting, no better luck than the first week unfortunately; but I console myself with the fact that this year was generally crappy for everybody...the total moose harvest was 50% of the previous season when bucks / cows / calves were permitted (2009)...and 30% below last year (bucks / calves only)...hopefully that means there will be a lot more to hunt next year !

Didn't do any work on the project last weekend, heavy rain all day saturday & sunday.

This weekend, my Dad came over to lend a hand again, we set the rafters over the pop-out section, installed the fascias on the ends of the trusses and the rafters, decked the roof, and started installing the fascias along the eaves...would have finished too, but my 2x4 calculations were a wee bit off...my decking calculations were spot-on though, only had a few scraps left over.

Here are some pics taken by my wife, mostly today.

Tomorrow is a "home office" day...so I will finish the fascias on the rear eave & the pop-out section, install the drip edges, then lay the tarpaper...next weekend we shingle the garage, and part of the roof on the house.

My house roof has 4 slopes, the lower section was redone about 15 years ago by the previous owner, and he did a really crappy job...most basic oversight was no vent ! The tiles on that back slope really take a beating in the summer sun, and have failed miserably...the front slope is still OK because thay are in the shade all morning and all afternoon...been wanting to do it for a while...but can't wait any longer!

My brother in law will be coming over again to give me hand with that, and he will bring one of his employees (whom I will pay accordingly), I am hoping to get the house roof repaired and the garage roof shingled in the same day. I will be doing the hauling of new material & garbage to keep them humming along !

Look for another update next week !

Re: It's finally my turn !

Howdy All;

Well the back slope of the house roof is repaired and reshingled, and the garage roof is shingled. Looking at the new shingles on the house compared to the existing ones, I think I will need to do the rest of the roof next year...it's amazing how short a life quality shingles will have when they are subjected to overheating from lack of proper ventilation...

It's been a long time since the last roof I shingled, and I remember now why...am I sore !

Hats off to all the roofers out there, it's a tough job.

I had great help from my B-I-L and his helper yesterday for the house roof, and my Dad came by today to help with garage roof and some clean-up work...although I had pretty much picked up all the **** yesterday...now I just need to go dump it all out of the back of my old pick-up truck tomorrow at the municipal dump.

I had rented an 18' hand cranked Genie Lift to bring all the materials up, and it worked great...but it would have been even better with a small electric winch !

I bought an air powered roofing nailer from Canadian Tire...the Mastercraft brand was on sale for $99...and it worked perfectly. My B-I-L had brought his own (Hausmann brand I think), but it stopped working after driving only 4 nails...thus my purchasing my own.

Next week, install the window, garage door, and man door...

ToDahLoo !

Well, last weekend saw me finish the shingles over the pop-out section of the garage, then I installed the window, then off to Home Depot to select a new door for the house...they were on sale 15% off, and the one I selected had a few slight scratches on it, so I asked for an extra discount...they gave me another 10%.

Installed the new frame in the garage man-door opening, then removed the house door from it's hinges and installed it on the garage, then popped the new door onto the house entryway.

Sunday afternoon was reserved for watching the race, Go Smoke !

pics to follow...

Re: It's finally my turn !

Howdy All;

Well, this weekend I finally installed the garage door !

I purchased it from a local Garaga (door manufacturer) dealer, it had been previously installed, but the customer didn't like it, so they replaced it by another model with windows, and they were stuck with this one. It's a $1200 dollar door that I got for $550, I was really happy with the deal.

I picked it up on the 4th of October, but did not install that weekend because I went deer hunting with my buddy...and the hunt was successful !

So, yesterday morning I set all the panels in order on my sawhorses, unwrapped them, broke out all the hardware, and took my time with the setup. By 3pm everything was in place, all that was left to do was wind the spring... I tried it with a couple of 12" long 3/8" socket extentions...after 10 quarter turns it was getting pretty sketchy, so I didn't proceed any further...

This morning I went to the hardware store and picked up a 1/2" diameter steel rod, 36" long, and cut it in half to make 2 good cranking levers... I tensioned the cables on the drums, locked the shaft in place with a pair of vise-grips, and put 36 quarter turns on the spring, then locked it down....

Tried the door, worked perfectly !

Next step will be emptying my storage locker to bring everything into the garage, then I start installing the electrical outlets & wiring !

Looking really good. Love the 3 generations working on the same project. Pics you will treasure. Poor hunting in Ottawa area...too warm. Good for fall building projects.

Been quite while since my latest update, this winter saw no work done on the garage at all, was basically used to store all my stuff while waiting for spring. Since the nice weather arrived, I finished installing the strapping all around the building, and then started shopping for siding.

I finally settled on a locally made product, rough sawn Hemlock 1x8 planks, 10 feet long (which matches my wall height)...which I then had locally milled for lap siding.

Cost per plank is $6.00, and I bought 200 to go all the way around the building...figuring some extra for damage & warpage.

I installed bunch of it today using galvanized nails to prevent rust streaks...still need to finish the back side and the gable ends...the strapping on the gable ends will be double thickness, and I will overlap the siding on top of the wall siding...should create a nice shadow line for definition...and break up the height of the building.

I will be staining with BEHR opaque stain...cream colored to match the house...the gables, corner boards and trim around window & doors will be darker to match the darker trim on the house.

I really like the way it's turning out...and the material was quite a bit more cost effective than vinyl siding (which I despise) or CanExel (a manufactured wood plank product).

Here are a few pics taken at the end of the day:

Finished installing the vertical siding just after lunch...then took a little nap...then watched the race...

Next weekend will finish the gables with the remaining planks that I stacked inside the garage.

Well, with a nice cool September day, it was time for a bit more work on the project... yesterday was rainy all day, crazy wind, and a 5 hour power failure... today was sunny with some clouds, nice cool 68 degrees, slept in a little this morning... then got to work closing up my front gable ends with the hemlock planks... will do the backside next weekend if Mother Nature obliges, then on with the trim and the staining... the gables and trim will be brown to match the garage door (and I will repaint the side door), the rest of the building will be cream colored similar to the aluminum siding on the house.

The nap lasted from june til september ?

Nope...my Dad was treated for liver cancer... and it was a lot tougher and longer in the hospital than we would have hoped... so that sidetracked things for a while... plus a 2 week vacation in Spain & Italy... and our summer was exceptionally hot & humid this year, so I just waited till it got a little cooler out.
