This was in a box I inherited from an old friend and I must admit, I've never seen a hammer handle like this one.

Anybody recognize it? It appears to say Shapleigh Hardware Co on the head but I can find little info about them on the net.

The handle looks like the older wood handles on the Ampco Non-Sparking bronze hammers. I thought the Ampco hammer handles were a proprietary design but they may not have been, or someone purchased a replacement and used it on a non Ampco hammer. The dimples are for extra grip.

I think I remember reading that old timers used to do that to hammer handles to improve grip in various conditions.

Ken tool used to have their line of tire changing equipment with that handle in them. I still have a couple of those I got from my dad.

That handle sure does feel good in your hand, there's no doubt about it.

Anybody care to try and put a date on this thing?

That is probably not the original handle on that tinners head. I've never seen a tinner do that or put that handle on one. I've seen them on BP's & Tire hammers and usually its for greasy environments like all cars before decent seals were finally developed (say pre 70's or 80's).

And that needs posted in the big hammer time thread...

I scored a cool carpenter's hammer over the weekend:

The cool part is the 2 ball bearings spring loaded in the claw to help grip a nail. The is a screw on one side used to assemble them:

The name looks like it might be "Cherry" but I can't make it out.
Anyone have any info on this one?

Nice find 2oolhound! That's one hammer I keep watching for, but have yet to find, is a carpenter's sinker starter...

Cheney, I've been calling it a `cherry but it sounds like I didn't waste my 2 bucks on it anyway. :D

The handle has some detent grips ground into it and I've never seen a drier handle. I'll have to try soaking it in linseed oil or something to see if I can save it.

Thanks for identifying it. One of the things I liked about it when I saw it was the curve of the claw. I always preferred this style so you can split wood with it easier. Apparently it's a No. 944 Bell Face 18 oz. Rip Cheney Nailer.
