I have been given a 1 ton ITT 1 ton chain fall for free and my plan is to use it to lift up small engines out of zero turn mowers and snowmobiles. How much would you trust a china made chain fall lifting up small engines?

Never trust any lifting device. That is the key to keeping safe. Have a plan to lift and get it to the ground, stand, or cribbing asap w/out getting under it. OSHA says a lifting device must have a safety rating 1.5x its load capacity. Meaning your chain fall should be built to withstand one and a half times its sticker rating before failure UNDER A SAFETY TEST. You also said the magic words...China! There are also other factors. Age of the device, previous abuse, the strength of what it is supported by, then theres Murphy's Law after all that! For what you plan to do, this SHOULD work ideally. But never put any trust in it. Also remember its a lifting device, not a holding device. Nice score and good luck!

we use a POS elcheapo NT 1 t chain fall for lifting engine/pumps out of equipment all the time.

they weigh a lot more than a sled motor


if it's in good condition, no stretched or twisted chain links it would bother me

I've actually been impressed at the construction and quality of Chinese made lifting equipment. I have a three ton Chinese made chain hoist that was new with the portable gantry crane I bought, and it works quite well, and seems well made. That being said, at flea markets, I buy US made rings, clevises and such, and skip over the China made stuff, but there is so much of it, I can afford to be picky.

After re-reading this, it almost sounds like you are trolling. You are asking if its OK to use a chain hoist rated at 2000 lbs (or was it one METRIC ton, 1000Kg or 2200 lbs) to hoist engines that weigh 50 ish lbs and 100 on the high side??????? An old half rotted rope and wood block and tackle would lift the stuff. If the brake inside the chain hoist works (this is one with a small chain to turn it and a large chain to lift, correct? or is this a true chain fall that has several pulleys top and bottom and the chain goes round and round? al la block and tackle.) then whats the problem?

well say 200 pounds then. 2000 to 200 is a 10 to 1 safety factor. add in the fact that a 2000 pound capacity itself has some safety factor built in and you should be plenty safe. i have used them and i would not advise loading them to the max but you are far below rated capacity.

as with any lifting device, the utmost in care and safety must be used but i would not lose any sleep over your stated use as long as you have it safely attached to the lift structure, you never get under the load and the load is properly attached to the hoist.

Well I looked up the 25HP V twin Kohler on my Great Dane zero turn and sans muffler its 115 lbs.

Most of the chain falls and come alongs I've seen have been made in china. I just purchased some USA mad CM come alongs, and they were hard to find and expensive
