LOL,

There are just some things you should not skimp on. Cheap jackstands are just not worth it. :lol_hitti I am willing to spend more for a set of jackstands that are holding my 3500 lb car and keeping me from meeting the Allmighty at a young age.

I say NO to these tools that are made by a 58 year old political prisoner in China. If I have my choice in it, I'll stay around a little while longer.

One more thing: The seller is trying to circumvent ebay fees since they are based on the selling price and not shipping costs. Boo! Hiss!

Funny you had the same experience with a jackstand and a gas tank.

Years ago I was putting rear discs on my Scirocco and had the car up on sheetmetal jackstands.

You guessed it-- they collapsed, with me being crushed between a wall in the garage and the falling car. The fall caused one of the stands to scrape off a gas line and the gas line started leaking like crazy.

I must have made enough noise because my wife came running into the garage, only to see me being pinned against the wall. We pushed the car off me, and after the gas leak was stopped, she said "You will never get under a car with jack stands again, right?". Dazed, I agreed.

That was when I was officially authorized to get a lift.

Since then, I haven't used them, in any form, and I really enjoy the lift.

Maybe the whole bad experience worked out: I wasn't killed, and I got Official Permission to have a lift!

I broke an internal valve on my cheap Crappy Tire jack, dropped the car... fortunately right onto the waiting jackstands. Whew! Only problem was, the car was now stuck on the stands without any way to get it off... and it was Sunday...

I ended up buying an all aluminum Michelin jack (ironically from Canadian Tire). Couldn't be happier.

Are most of the issues people have with jackstands is that they fail or that the car shifts over and the car falls off the stands?

I'm thinking about getting some bigger jackstands (12 ton?) for my cars (see sig below). Might be overkill but it beats getting crushed under the MPV.
All of these stories have got me paranoid. I think might also have to add ramps under the wheels as well just for the piece of mind.

I always lift up my cars with a 5 ton jack. First I set the parking brake, then chock the wheels, lift up the car, then place a jackstand underneath it. I then lower the jack until the weight is fully supported, then I raise my jack until it comes into contact with the frame and slight resistance is met. I then get up and push the car with my full weight side to side, then front to back. After that, I will get underneath it.

It pains me to think that when I was young and stupid I used to get under a car with a tire jack inserted into the bumper while on gravel to work on the starter of a Big block Buick.

I was lucky.

The only Time I get under a car that I havent put on stands myself or my dad didnt is when it has been sitting on stands for a day or two and its been worked on. Other than that, I make sure I am the one putting the car up on jackstands. People are stupid and dont pay attention. If I get killed Id rather it be my own ******* mistake than somebody elses. I go with 2 jackstands and the jack supporting the car somewhere else. I always use the parking brake and chock the wheels as well. I also make sure that if I hear a creaking noise and something isnt right I can crawl my *** damn fast out from under it rather than have to climb over an oil drain pan and stuff like that. Make sure Im not rolled over any hoses or wires with the creeper either.

Also, Ive seen people get under a car without wheels on. This is one thng you should never do either because if the stands fail or something at least you might have somewhat of a chance.

Those things literally look like they came out of a toy set.

I can see some litle kid jacking up his Tonka truck and then putting it on the stands...
