Jack Issue - Not lowering slowly, binding

I am having an issue with a Harbor Freight jack. It's a low-profile 3-ton. The jack works well and lifts and holds no problem but the issue is when lowering.

If I have light weight on the jack (something like a riding mower, etc) it will lower just fine. Slow and smooth depending on how quickly I release the handle. The issue comes when there is a lot of weight like my truck (Silverado CrewCab).

I don't think it's an issue with the internals but more with the gears connecting the handle to the hydraulic cylinder. When I try to turn the handle to release pressure and lower, it binds. I have to put quite a bit of force to get the handle to turn and unbind which then causes the jack to drop quickly and violently.

I've tried a little grease and that didn't help. Any suggestions on why it all of a sudden started doing this? I have taken very good care of it too so no major abuse.

**Edit, I've had this jack for at least 5-6 years so no warranty, etc.**
