I think we have featured Jack's shop before here on The Garage Journal. To put it simply, it's one of my favorite spaces to ever grace the pages of this site... It's just ...

I believe his garage is a inspiration to many garage enthusiast who want to stay organized. Very clean and well laid out. Hell I wish my 30x40 would stay that clean. I need to frame up some walls to keep my workshop dust from getting everywhere.

Wow. Thanks, Ryan.

I was out there working before lunch today, using a little vise-mounted press brake to bend some hinges for a pair of toddler gates I'm putting in the hallway outside his room.

littlebrake.jpg

How cool is it to be able to make repeatable bends without having to beat the material with a hammer? I'd never used one of these before.

And I know the garage always looks clean like a kitchen in its pictures. But that's not usually the case. Here it is right before I tore out the center island cabinets for the new (used) Vidmar drawer units I put in earlier this month. Still a lot of stuff out from the engine swap and follow-up work -- plus a couple of house projects going at the same time. Pretty messy, for this place.

messygarage.jpg

And while I'm posting, let me both apologize to (and also thank) the guys who are on this board enough that the over-exposure of my garage -- usually with the clean photos -- has reached dangerous levels of overexposure. There are two kinds of users on this site, I think: the guys who are here day in and day out (like me), and the much-more-occasional users. I re-post a lot of pictures with the assumption that the occasional (or new) members probably haven't seen what I'm talking about. But I think it's probably safe to assume that this could come across as a little bit much to the members who read enough posts to see some of the same images and advice over and over. So let me apologize for that. I got a lot of helpful advice from this board when I was putting my garage together. I try to pass it along to newer guys here.

So, Ryan. Jack's thread has drawn continued attention since February and seems to be a favorite, as well as being newly discovered by newbies to GJ. What does it take to make Jack's Masterpiece a Sticky on the Garage Gallery? I think I asked about this before (I might have asked Bull and not you). Hopefully this can happen. It's one of my favorites. (I just noticed that Jack hit <enter> before I did!)(Also, there's no over-exposure, IMO. People wouldn't respond if they weren't interested.)

Congrats Jack. I haven't been on the site too long [as far as join date] but I visit very regularly since I joined. I have seen a lot of your posts in threads and I wouldn't consider them to be over-exposure. IMHO, it's inspiration for a bunch of us to do more with our garages.

The only creepy thing is that you're always staring at me when you post... :lol_hitti

I don't mind seeing Jack's garage often. It's an inspiration for not only organization but also what you can do in a smaller space, it doesn't seem to hinder him with the projects he takes on. Creativity at it's best.

I am among the hundreds if not thousands of people who has seen the work of Jack on this site. I always read one word that describes him best: "Inspiration." As always, I not only love to see the neat, organized, functional garage you have but also you innovative style. Sure it gets dirty as you posted earlier but we always love that too in any garage. Everyone can put a garage together but far less do it in a way like this. And what makes it even cooler is that it's not a 40' x 75' over-budgeted mansion-garage, it's a well planned perfect specimen of a guy using every square inch of a humble garage in ways most of us never think of. My hats off to you, Jack! Keep up the fabulous work.

Jack - what was life like before you became our mascot? :)

I never mind seeing Jack's work - seems like every time I see a picture I find a new detail I missed previously.....but the same can be said for so many other things I've seen on this forum (which, not coincidentally, is generally the most helpful and civil forum I've ever participated in!).

I need to hang a picture of this garage on the ceiling above my bed for inspiration. Even "messy" it's still a great looking garage. I love how everything is well thought out and is a good use of the space.

Whew!

Jack, Thank you very much for posting the "messy" picture.

Don't get me wrong, I love your garage, but I have never seen it as my garage appears to me the majority of the time (with most horizontal space covered with stuff in process).

I - for one - am SICK of Jack's garage.....

SICK of it looking so good. SICK of it being so nicely laid out. SICK of it showing up so clean and dandy - with a SICK Porsche in it to boot! But not only that, I'm SICK of learning sick ways to organize. SICK of learning how to make two-side clocks, roller air-lines that come out of holes in the cabinets, bendy-jaws for the vice. And it's SICK to see how he can move a 600pound steel plate, weld up 200 stiles for a steel fence, or put up a wicked sun-shade. Lucky for me I guess that in todays world - SICK is good!

No need whatsoever Jack to apologise for the (perceived) over exposure of your garage on GJ. As many have said before me & no doubt many more will repeat again, you & your garage are an inspiration.

I always look forward to seeing an update to the "12 Gauge Garage" thread. I really do admire your ingenuity in packing so much into a garage space such as you have. Sure the larger garages posted on here are absolutely amazing & I thoroughly enjoy reading about them. But, by and large they are garages to dream about, or to pick up a little tip from here or there. Your garage however is the "real life garage", something that is achievable & one that I can aspire to replicating.

Keep posting Jack

I found this site after reading the Great Garage Makeover magazine earlier this year. It's been an inspiration to hear Jack tell all the details of the 12-gauge garage that did not get mentioned in a magazine article. And to see the garage while its being used is also an inspiration to know its not just for show. But how can it be with all the cool projects Jack makes in that garage?

I think each one of us has in the back of our minds as we start another project, What Would Jack Do? You know, the other WWJD!

Thanks Ryan for posting and Thanks Jack for not letting anything be just 'Good Enough'.

Forr some reason Jack, I can't see (download or whatever) your "messy" pic...I'd love to see it. Your clean one continues to be my laptop wallpaper and an inspiration.

Your humility about all the platitudes you recieve here is refreshing Jack. I agree with what most have posted about how you inspire so many. I have a long way to go (may never get there in fact) to get my space as organized and clean looking as yours. But it always gives me something to shoot for.
And thanks for the picture of your messy garage. Although by my standards, if I got my place looking even that good, I would feel happy, it's also good to see yours messed up a little. It's kind of like seeing that honey you always thought was so beautiful for the first time without makeup on and realizing she's just human after all.

Love your shop. I enjoy seeing all your build threads. Thanks again for all your advise and input.

NOW I must own a vise-mounted press brake!

No, no no....he's Mrs. Olsen's son.

You remember the lady on the Folger's coffee commercials. ""Ya dat's da richess kind!"

(Sorry Jack, I couldn't help myself. These commercials REALLY date me, oh well!)

I'd have to agree with you being the inspiration for a lot of people Mr Jack, myself included. I love seeing your projects (the zip line is my fav) and the continuing change that occurs in your 12 gauge gsarage, proves that good is never good enough and that you don't have to have a over the top shop to be a huge inspiration a huge number of people!

If I ever get the chance I'd love to buy him a cup of joe or a beer as thanks!

Marsha Marsha Marsha!!!!

Whoops - I meant Jack Jack Jack!!!!

:lol_hitti

I was thinking the same thing... :lol_hitti

I'm sick of Jack. I bought a new parts washer a month ago and still haven't put it together because I don't know where to put the thing in my 2 car garage. Jack would have already had a hole cut in the floor and run hydralics so it could rise from it's trap door in the floor like a phoenix.... :lol_hitti

Looks normal to me.

If I'm not having to push **** off the workbench to find a clear spot than something is wrong. haha!

Your garage looks to be extremely shallow, or is that just the pics? Judging by the floor tiles looks like 18, maybe 20ft?

It's basically 20'x20' with a little alcove for the sink. (It's detached, with an office extending the footprint out another 12 feet or so.) The back work bench is about 30" deep and those back cabinets are 24" deep, so some of the floor space gets eaten up -- but all of my cars (Porsche/Jeep/BMW) are pretty short, so they fit without any problem.

I'm in the city and don't own a truck -- the old Jeep has to fill in, even for 20-foot lengths of steel. If I had the room, I'd have a pick up.

The one leap I havent been able to convince myself to make is dividing the garage down the middle like that (even though this is perfect execution!).

I actually dont park any vehicles in the garage (except for the Kart)....so there's really no compelling reason for me not too....

I suppose stuff in the middle could be put on casters.......hmmmm......
