Hey Jack on the vise brake how well does it work? Is it easy to use or tricky to keep the metal in place? How hard is it to bend, does the vice turn fairly easy or do you have to bear down hard? what about hte thickness of the metal? I may have to get one myself.

Looks normal to me.

If I'm not having to push **** off the workbench to find a clear spot than something is wrong. haha!

Your garage looks to be extremely shallow, or is that just the pics? Judging by the floor tiles looks like 18, maybe 20ft?

Good! So I'm not the only one.

ps. where does your wife park?
Out in the street.

I wish there was room for her, but -- well -- she drives a Prius. So it's not like we're lovingly preserving the thing.

how did the gate come out?
The steel in the picture was for the shade canopy for our indoor/outdoor courtyard thing (I'm sure there's a name for it, but I don't know what it is). But the fence gate came out fine. I made it in two pieces that swing either in or out, like a saloon door.

FenceFeb.jpg

Here's the canopy thing, from above. (From below, it's sheer enough so that you don't really see the fabric -- it just cuts the intensity of the sunlight.)

The one leap I havent been able to convince myself to make is dividing the garage down the middle like that (even though this is perfect execution!).

I actually dont park any vehicles in the garage (except for the Kart)....so there's really no compelling reason for me not too....

I suppose stuff in the middle could be put on casters.......hmmmm......
Yeah, I did that based on the way I work in there. But it's not for everybody. If I did more car stuff and less bench work, I probably wouldn't want that to be permanent. The other factor for me was that I already had a pillar there to deal with. So the decision was already partially made.

I was bending a Harbor Freight strap hinge that's a little thicker than 14 gauge and a little thinner than 12 gauge. It held in position well and was reasonably easy to crank down. It scuffed the paint where the shoulders of the female die pressed against it. But all in all, I was happy -- much easier than my usual big hammer technique.

If you can sit down with her and convince her to take over the expenses, I'll buy you another trailer. :) We both work as writers. I'm in my office, most days, which is part of the same detached structure as the garage. So if I'm working something out in my head, I can usually walk around the corner and do something in the garage while I think. Unfortunately, there are long stretches where I'm on deadline and can't do anything else -- pretty much all day, every day -- for weeks at a time. But then I also get long stretches of time to use as I want. It's a trade off.

Good! So I'm not the only one.
Any garage that's used is going to get piled deep, pretty much. The thing that made the biggest difference for me was getting the place well-enough organized that everything has a place to go. In 20-30 minutes, I can have the place back to square one. That never used to be the case. (And for my office, it still isn't.)

Jack,
i was wondering about the child gate? where you were bending the hinges on the press brake.
I have a 2 year old & a 4 year old and am always looking for ideas on how to "contain" them.

Not sure if this has been asked before, nor am I entirely sure if I'm not stepping way out of line with this, but curiosity just really has been getting the better of me, so I just have to ask.

Can you tell us any of the shows that you might have written Jack ?

I know that having first read that you are a screenwriter, I've been keeping an eagle eye on the end credits of some of my favourite shows, in the hope that I might spot your name, but alas no, I've not.

I'd just love to know if you've been involved in writing any of the shows I watch.

Apologies, Jack, if I'm stepping out of line by asking this

Ah. The child gates are working well, so far. The 2-year-old is moving to a toddler bed, which means he can get out at night, so I took some old compression-fit gates and made hinges to mount them permanently in the hallway his room empties out to. This makes it easier to open and close them, since the lever-down type always seems to want to come loose. The downside is holes in the plaster.

We're also adding the slide-bolt type of locks high up on most doors, since the kid is clever and persistent -- but not very tall.

Can you tell us any of the shows that you might have written Jack?
No TV. I sold one pilot to CBS about a decade ago, but my bread and butter has always been rewrite work in regular movies (theatrical features). You won't see my name for the majority of that, either. I mostly fix other peoples' work, which is not very glamorous -- but I've making a living at it for 14 years now. I'm currently working on a script that reinvents the Frankenstein legend for the company that produced the Underworld movies. But it's unlikely my name would end up on it, either. It's got some cool art, though:

Please tell me these are based off the Dean Koontz frankenstein books, I would love to see those turned into a movie or tv show.

No such luck. It's based on an original idea by one of the writers (and actors) from the Underworld series. Or at least, it was. It's hard to say where this one is going to end up, at this point.

Glad to see Jack's garage featured. Good job Ryan! I have followed some of Jack's projects here and have always been impressed. I really like the way that Jack does his work on a limited budget, reusing something to make it work better than something new and store bought. Jack Olsen is the one guy that could make chicken salad out of chicken chit! Thanks Ryan and Jack for sharing.

One of the posters commented on how this was one of the most civil sites he has been on. When you look at the inspiration Jack has provided to us all, to make more out of less and be creative with everything, it's easy to see how for the most part we manage to stay out of the ******* matches and provide genuine help, information and an ocassional friendly shoulder to cry on. Kudos to you guys who all contribute to make GJ one of the best sites on the web.

That made me LOL.

I know Jack a little bit from the track, a little bit from hitting the local canyon drives and a lot more on the Net.

Yes, he does all of those things. But he does all of those things very naturally and other than posting for our fun, he's really quite humble about it all. In fact, in person, he's kinda quiet. He is extremely approachable and will share his time, but he's on the move constantly. yet, he doesn't look like he's working hard.

Some people just do all that very well. But, if there's any one thing about Jack, it's the dedication that will make almost anyone a success in whatever endeavor they choose.

A few months ago I read Mjozefow's thread on his budget garage build. In the thread was this little nugget from Jack:

"At 20, I'm pretty sure I spent my days picking my nose and throwing rocks at the neighbor's fence. Or something like that. "

And that kind if writing is why, at least in my opinion, he can make a living at it! If the writing jobs slow down, which I would seriously doubt, he could make a living selling tours of his garage. I would sign up!

Really guys, this is getting a little embarrassing - if not for Jack,, then for sure for all of you that look like they're sporting a bro-mance with Jack....:lol_hitti

PS - Jack, have you read the book: "The Art of Racing in the Rain" ? You'll love it. I did. I can send you my copy if you don't have it. Or I could read it to you over Skype. Or in person - whatever...I like to read under a tree at the beach....do you like the beach? I'm thinking of visiting LA soon....

I could do without the caps and t-shirts.

But thanks to everyone who has said something nice about the garage or its owner. The thread has made it to a point where I kind of feel like someone who's been forced into retirement and is getting a nice dinner as a send-off. ;)

Jack Olsen.......oh yeah....... I just put two and two together and realized his garage is in the "Great Garage Makeovers" magazine, I bought last spring. A really nice garage, Jack. I have been admiring it for months now, before I saw it on this site. I always wanted to ask, what kind of greenery is that growing across the top of the building. It doesn't look like wisteria and I doubt if you would have grapes over your garage door. It really makes you garage look great. Good luck..........j willis

I did read it. I tried to get my foot in the door for writing the movie adaptation, in fact. The actor (and sometime racer) Patrick Dempsey controls it. I told them that of all the writers they'd be talking to, I was the only one who could easily beat the book's author at Thunderhill, even in the rain.

No luck, though. It went to somebody else.

Yeah, it was pretty much the same garage but with just about every piece different in the magazine.

Now:

And even that's changed now that the cabinet in the middle has been replaced.

The vine on the walls of the detached garage/office is a mystery to me. It's been there as long as we've owned the place. It loses its leaves in the winter and comes back in the summer. I don't know much about plants, but a quick Google search makes me think it might be a wild grape (although the berries don't cluster) or something in the Virgina Creeper family?

Can anyone who knows about plants identify it?

Jack, while I do love your shop, one other thing in particular caught my eye.

I would love to hear more about the drain in front of your shop. If you would rather take offline, no prob you can PM. My concrete wasnt done quite right and a good hard rain can flood my shop. It's happened 5-6 times in the past 9 years, literally 2 inches standing water front to back. Miserable! It takes a dandy of a rain, but we seem to be getting them once a year or so now days. I considered cutting the concrete and installing a drain with a grate over it, and saw your pic showing yours, its exactly what I had in mind.

Just curious if you built that in, or installed after the fact. Whats under the grate, nothing, concrete, drain pipe? Thanks for any info.

I believe his garage is a inspiration to many garage enthusiast who want to stay organized. Very clean and well laid out. Hell I wish my 30x40 would stay that clean. I need to frame up some walls to keep my workshop dust from getting everywhere.

His garage gives the guys with smaller garages and limited income hope. :)

Your garage is a masterpiece of small, design and use of space. I love it and you must feel great that you have inspired others. What is it that you do for a living that keeps you in your garage?

It's from the previous owner. It's a 17' long channel about a foot from the opening to the garage. It's 5" wide and 9" deep. It functions as a trap, and the galvanized grating is removable so you can clean it out. A few inches above the bottom is an opening at one end that is the head of a storm drain line that runs around one side of the house and is also fed by some downspouts and surface drains.

Your garage is a masterpiece of small, design and use of space. I love it and you must feel great that you have inspired others. What is it that you do for a living that keeps you in your garage?
Thanks. Most of the time, my job keeps me out of the garage and over in the small office that's part of the same detached structure.

I'm a writer.

I gotta admit, Jack's pretty creative, and seems to be able to maintain a higher degree of garage-organization than most of us.

But I have to ask... please, please let me know if you ever want to get rid of that CJ-7.

Jack's garage is my constant inspiration when "hiding" things in mine. Also, one of the neat shots is the wallpaper on my computer as a constant reminder and goal. Thanks Jack.
