New garage/shop has 16x7 door and just realized that the 8500w is only rated to 14’ wide doors.

What are folks using for ‘wide’ doors (at least by lift master terms)?

Yes, it has to be a side mount opener.

Myq is absolutely preferred.

I just looked at the installation manual for the 8500W on the Liftmaster website, and it says it is compatible with doors up to 18 feet wide. That 14 foot dimension is for how tall the door is. Go here: https://www.liftmaster.com/liftmaster-8500w-wall-mount-opener/p/8500W scroll down to Installation and Support, then click on "Manual".

I picked up a used commercial Liftmaster jackshaft opener for mine (18'x10') My door is a heavy insulated door. Works like a charm. Only problem I have is the slowness of the door opening, I was told what size jack shaft sprocket I needed, could have been smaller for faster opening but oh well, It works.

I went this route for a few reasons.
One, all the problems I have heard with he 8500 opener failing
Second, cost. I picked mine up for $200, probably spent another $100-$150 for other parts
Third, its a commercial opener, not a homeowners version.

I have a 16 x 8 with an 8500. I am installing two 16 x 12 in my barn. If I do not have windows, the factory says an 8500 will work. If I put one row of windows in they recommend I go to the next level of jack shaft opener. I think the number was a MJ5011U. The tech I talked to said the key factor was mainly weight and the glass was heavy. Usage and the number of openings a day was a minor factor also. The info they post also talks about overall square footage of the door which the tech indicated was more of a guideline but weight was the big key.

Thanks for the clarification. Not sure how I missed that spec but seems I’ll be fine. My door will have a row of glass but seems I’ll still be in good shape with the small door (relative to others). Thanks guys!
