Did you guys see this?

http://www.jackpointjackstands.com/

Pretty spendy but interesting.

I'll have to say this thread did serve a useful purpose, I'm going to pick up a few of these today! They look too convenient to not use them

http://revlimiter.net/blog/2010/07/mega-jack-stand-review-2/#chock

Neat idea but I don't like the idea of a fixed height... plus these are only 12" high... depending on the job I typ want the stands to go as high as my jack will allow <20"

I don't even think you could get away with an oil change on a car with these stand.

I have a set of these.

https://www.pepboys.com/product/details/9316470/01644

They have a cast aluminum base and shaft so you don't have to worry about any welds. Can't tell about the quality of the casting but it "looks" pretty good. And they have PINS. I quit with the ratchet system years ago. Yea, the pins may be slightly more difficult to use but I'm in my garage, not in the pits at Indy.

I will never use a ratcheting prawl type system ever again. If you're worried about the pins sheering, buy better ones.

If anyone is worried about the pins shearing they're just a chronic worrier. Any decent pin in double shear is not going to fail.

Pretty sure most of us are way more worried about the stability of that small base. They also don't go up that high, which considering the base size is probably a good thing, but how useful would they be?

This thread was an informative read. I've been wanting to replace my jack stands for awhile now as well. The inherent problem I've found is every set I've looked at doesn't look any better than the HF stands. I've looked at the offerings at every major auto parts store as well as the Craftsman's and the options at HD & Lowes. They all are thin metal with questionable welds. The aluminum stands with the pin from Sunex and OTC are nice but I agree the base seems small and stability could be an issue.

I just wish I could find some that were built like a tank, had a broad base, used pins as primary lock or had them as a backup feature and had welds that were clean and provided some confidence in the quality of the product.

The round flat tops look **** but every time I've used jack stands I drop a truck frame in the cradle and the frame is sloping ('cause I'm dropping an axle or something). To have an inclining/declining frame hit a radius of a round pad you only get a TINY point of contact. I'd need a cradle to at least go the WIDTH of the framerail.

The ESCO can be ordered with cradle!

Actually biggest negative is they require two hands and more of your body under the vehicle to set. Makes you more susceptible to harm if the floor jack fails in the process of placing the stands.

Second to this, you can punch the pin out even with weight on the stand. The pawl styles are locked with weight on them. It would take a freak accident for sure to have the pin get knocked out while you're under the vehicle but weirder deaths/injury have occurred.

Im happy with my US jack stuff. Also worth noting in the tool polisher thread posted before US Jack agreed the welds weren't, cosmetically, up to their standards and offered to replace the stands on their dime.

For me, if I need to be under the car:
1. Larger than needed jackstand - I used a 3T for my 3500lbs car. Overkill? Yes, but that is my safety margin.
2. I leave the 3T floor jack supporting the car even when I am using jackstands.
3. I put the wheel + tire under the car too. In the event that jackstand and floor jack fails, the car wont crush me to a pancake.

I am DIY, most of the time, I do not need to be under the car.

I wish I can find some that is build like a tank too, but without the price of a tank !

That's an ESCO with a tripod design (so always in contact with ground) and locking pin w/ safety clip... the welds though aren't necessarily going to when any awards. There's no way you going to knock the pin out either, by accident at least... Honestly even our old US made stands aren't prettier, stout yes.

So this thread shouldn't be about a HF stand that failed, but user error which lead to it failing. If these things were failing at any rate, they'd be long gone from store shelves. With ANY stand my concern is not them failing spectacularly, but the car slipping off (getting too rough underneath, only 1 end lifted and not chocked, etc...).

I will continue to use my HF jack stands as they are always used in the fully lowered position. I might consider an upgrade if I need something different, but most likely I'd just use a backup pair of stands.

Glad you weren't hurt OP.

Id be interested in how you believe there was user error.

LOL, and you're not asking too much. Plus it's not like jackstands are rocket science. It's an extremely straightforward tool.

Pipe stands tick off most of the boxes but they're too tall for most people. The welds on my Ridgid pipe stands are very good. Now they only bind on a collar but one could drill them to accept a pin I suppose.

Might check on CL, or swap meets, for older USA made, see them all the time. Don't need any more, but I still find it hard to resist buying them when I see them.

Bad, bad, bad idea. It appears what you've done is defeat a safety mechanism built into the jack stand.

Here's why. There's a shear pin that attaches the handle to the pawl. It's there so you can't lift the handle when there's a car on the stand and release the stand. If you, for example, accidentally raised a floor jack under the handle, the shear pin would break before the handle released the pawl and dropped the vehicle.

By welding that, you've defeated the shear pin and made it so you can drop the stand when there's a vehicle on it.

I'm guessing your original shear pin either broke or fell out.

I thought the pin they include with the stands is for us to install to keep the post from coming out/hyperextending out of the base.
