Jack Stands - what size?

4 or 3 ton? Bigger?

One pair? Two pair?

How do figure how many and what size you need?

Depends on what you are working on. Me personally, I have 4 6 ton, and 2 3 ton. Although I would like to get 4 12 ton ones so I can put stands under the frame on my jeep.

So basically 2 pairs of 3 different sizes

It depends. for holding up or storing rear ends, or for supporting exhaust, etc, I use the cheapo 3 ton. For a car I plan on going under, 6 ton. For my trucks or to get a trans out from under a low car, 12 ton. The higher you go, the taller they get.

I have four 3-ton stands, never wanted for more as far as working on a single vehicle at a time.

Then again, I don't work on one-ton diesel trucks, in which case I might want to upgrade to 6 ton jacks just to be safe.

I really don't know how many I have but the ones I use most often are big. Probably 12 ton. Get 4 of those and you can hold up just about anything, stable and safe.

I have 6 three tons and 4 6 tons. Also have a set of ramps for the quick stuff. The smaller ones are great for quick light work. The larger ones are good for serious work where more head room is beneficial.

You needs may dictate the need for different stands though.

A lot depends on how high you want something off the ground. Honestly 3 ton jack stands will support a one ton diesel if you only want the tire an inch off the ground. I have six 3 tons, four 6 tons and four 12 ton. 6 tons are nice for pick ups as it gets them high enough off the ground to do anything you are going to do on jack stands. My 12 tons are mostly for tractors as they go high enough to support the axles.

I have a pair of 3 ton and a pair of 6 ton stands, I work on everything from corollas and civics to F550's but mostly 60's-70's American cars. The only time I really needed more was doing an engine and k-frame swap side by side.

I have four 6 ton stands. Working on four wheel drive vehicles, its hard to get enough lift out of a 3 ton stand. The 6 ton stands are also a lot more confidence inspiring to work under.

Yep, buy what you need for the vehicle or the specific jobs you will be doing.

I work on tiny compacts (Fiesta), small SUV's (Escape), mid size (Taurus) and a Ford Excursion that weighs 7900lbs empty, and a 34" travel trailer.

I have 4 of each size 3 Ton, 6 ton, and 12 ton. The 12 ton is just so I can reach the frame on the Excursion.

Weight, height you are going to lift and the height of the vehicle all work together to determine the right jackstand.
