I would use HF jack stands, we use some pretty cheesy ones at work to hold up the groomers that are napa branded taiwanese specials. So far in the 5 years Ive been using them none of them have distorted or anything so I would be willing to bet you would be fine with HF jack stands. I also use some cheap torin ones at home and they work fine.(not sure if thats what HF has im more of a northern tool type of guy)

My neighbor's had an old 60s Mustang on four jackstaands for... I want to say ten years, now. They still look like the day he bought them. And so does the Stang which he refuses to sell me.
They are solidly built, and I feel as safe with them under there as I do with my Craftsman ones.

Yes. They look better-built than some of the Craftsman ones. I have 2 sets of their 3-ton jackstands. They are solid little stands.

Good, does any one knows when the 6 ton jack stands go on sale?
Are any coupons?

Only one I've ever seen on sale is the 2 ton. But just check your newspaper for some 20% coupons and you'll be golden.

I recently bought 2 sets of the 6 ton jack stands with the 20% coupon, and used them this past weekend. They were totally stable for me, but my truck isn't that heavy. Don't think I'd actually want 6 tons on each set, but I don't work on anything that heavy.

I wouldn't use them but that's just me. I like my Lincoln 5 ton stands.

i have a set of them in the garage, a set in my service truck, several sets of them at the shop.

only issue is that they get run over and crushed once in a while at the shop.

I have the six-ton units from HF. They're fine under my 4000lb '78 Chrysler and under my 5000lb '82 Dodge D350 crew cab...

I wouldn't have a problem use the 6 ton HF jack stands. I have plenty of jack stands already though.

it is more of how high you want to lift the car.
the 6 ton are taller then the smaller ton stans. I like the size of the 6 ton myself

i bought two pairs of 6 ton hf stands 7 or 8 years ago to get a 70s chevy van high enough to drag the ****** out of under it. they lifted it high enough for me to sit up under the van! perfectly stable. been using them for occasional work since. i like the high lift for bigger jobs, but sometimes wish i had a smaller set for minor jobs. overall i am happy with the quality and feel safe with them.

I'm sure HF are fine but I think the stands from US Jack are well worth the extra investment. They have a much larger base, better ratcheting mechanism and they are rated per jack as opposed to as a set. I have two pair of the 3 ton stands and I love them.

usjack.com. You just need to call them up to place an order direct. With shipping it cost me about $130 for the two pair but I'm only a little ways around a big lake from them. For what you get they are a much better value.

I hear HF jackstands deteriorate after a few years and you have to replace them. Something to do with the alloys in the metal breaking down. Think they're good for about 3-4 years, then you need to get another pair.

Gee, that sounds a lot like how an hour after eating Chinese food, you're hungry again...

My local Napa sells some USA made stands, I almost fell over when he told me the price, over 200 bucks for 5 or 6 ton ones

It's just a little good-natured trolling.

In reality, there are very, very few jack stands still made in the US. You'll probably find the exact same HF ones under a bunch of different brands.

BTW- Can anyone name a USA set of jack stands? Are the OTC ones made in the USA?

EDIT - The OTC stands don't say made in the USA, so I assume they're imported.

Hein Werner does have some USA ones, though.

US Jack. (that is not a brand made up by Harbor Freight!)

Some OTC is USA and some is not. When I was shopping I was able to figure out which was which.

US Jack had the widest base so I went with them.

I have the Hein-Werner 6 ton as well. Made in the USA. I think they were on special: a little over $100 shipped.

I have a pair of Harbor Freight's. One of the pair was defective right out of the box. You wouldn't know it by looking at it, but it slips. It's very easy to think you've got the lever engaged. The other of the pair doesn't have this problem. Someone could get hurt with that kind of lack of QC. I've been meaning to provide photos.

I have three pairs of the HF 6 ton stand I think they are. If I'm getting under the vehicle, I never trust a single set of stands. If any stand fails, I want a backup there, I don't know that I'd trust any stand as a single point of failure for getting underneath the vehicle.

You don't always need to get a vehicle that high. I use my 3 tons on the lowest or first setting mostly on my GF's beetle.

As I said before, I haven't used my 6 tons in years.

It's not high. It's high enough to get underneath it and change the oil and filter. If I used the three ton stands, it would be much more difficult to do it.

Just b/c you don't use them doesn't mean everyone else shouldn't. :wtf:

I have a set of HF 6 tonners that have never given me any issues. I use them for pretty much everything except my Bronco (I've got a set of custom stands I use for lifted trucks). I try to go with the tallest base section I can for less leverage on the skinny part of the stand.
