jacks in the junkyard

Started this thread after reading the thread about the jack problem in another thread today. I went to the junkyard and picked-up a total of 7 jacks(3 bottle and 4 of the screw type) for $4.99 each. Two of the jacks were for people outside the family. Three of the screw type went to one son who does not like bottle jacks. Bottom line was that not a one of the jacks appeared to have ever been used. I figured $5.00 was not a bad price to pay for an extra jack to have around considering they have other uses besides jacking up a car. So consider a pick n' pull next time you need a jack.

The pick and pulls around here remove the jacks before they go out on the lot. People were getting killed when the vehicle fell off the jack.
They also do not let you bring them in, along with power tools.

The pick and pulls around here have the vehicles already off the ground. They weld several wheels without tires together and put them under the corners of the vehicle.

Most pick-n-pulls are on soft gravel, and the yards are usually empty during the week. That must be a scary situation to be in.

I have taken cordless impacts into the yards so not all power tools are banned.

Where do I find myself a cool junk yard with piles of tools just scattered around?
All I got around here is a bunch of places with all the cars missing the one dang interior piece I need for cup holder

The pick and pulls I visit are in Toledo Ohio. Every trip is an adventure. I have seen things on a vehicle on trip #2 that I missed seeing on trip # 1. Sometimes you get lucky. My son needed the rear bumper shell for an 07 Elantra. They had one 07 and fortunately it had been hit in the front. I got it for $21 and the body shop in Illinois wanted $250 for the same part.

I used to buy them all the time from the local salvage yard, could usually get them for scrap prices...I have so many now that I stopped buying them, must have at least 20-30.

I'm glad you mentioned this, you inspired me to go pick up a scissor jack. One sure would have saved me some time and effort today hanging a heavy glass door. My floor jack was too high, and my pump jack (air bag) wasn't high enough. A scissor jack would've been perfect.

I have several bottle jacks and two floor jacks. The bottle jacks I seldom use, and when I do use them it is to lift a beam in a house or something similar to that. I don't use them to lift a vehicle.

Toyota used to make a real slick bottle jack that was a screw drive. Came with a 3 ft. long turning lever thing. Last time I saw one was on a 1986 Toyota truck. Dark brown color; similar to UPS brown.

Chrysler used them too. My gen 2 Ram has one. It was so handy, I used it so much in college helping friends out with flats, tire rotations, brakes, etc, that I actually wore it out! $x from the local U-Pull-It netted me an unused one that's still in that truck today. Had to be creative living in the dorms!

That's great, unless the parts you need are holding the vehicle up. I once removed an entire Ford Twin I-Beam front end during an all-you-can-carry sale. I found a small scissors jack in another car. Since the Ford trucks are supported by the front axles, they really gave me the old fish eye when I went to check out. BTW- an entire Ford front end, including the discs and brakes is HEAVY!

Here are some that were put out for garbage man. The one second last on the right is the type L. Cheapo refers to...Chrysler and they came with a long crank handle all attached to the inner RH fender. My Lil Red has one and that started much earlier.

Yeh oem jacks are useful cheap/free quality items .
I got a couple hydraulic ones and 4 scissor type from nissans, they come in super handy working on cars or construction stuff at times .
thread rod in the scissor ones also makes a nice bushing removal/fitting forcing screw .

Although a lot of places take them out to sell in the office. If you need one in the yard look for suburbans and tahoes. The jack is in the left quarter panel and often get left, guess the location isn't common knowledge if you dont deal with gm vehicles.

Not to throw this off topic, do junkyards ever sell a bucket full off lug nuts? Up here in the rust belt you find they start to get swollen and hard to remove after 5-10yrs.The aftermarket ones are junk unless its a plain (not chromed) nut. Been using the dealer, but that can be pricey. A bucket full of a variety would be nice.

Here, if they take the tires/rims off, they just throw the lug nuts on the ground. I've told them several times to save them in buckets, but they don't seem to want to take the time.

I got a box of 100 McGard solid acorn 1/2"-20 lugnuts on amazon.ca for under $65cdn. The price jumps up and down like a yoyo (currently they are listed for around $150cdn)

Keep an eye on the price and strike when they drop.

I know you said you are no fan of aftermarket, but McGards are decent, and at 65 cents a piece, I won't shed a tear when I need to replace a few of them after a few winters.

Wish I could find a deal like that for shouldered ford lug nuts, those things are like butter and I go through at least 10 of those a year on one vehicle when swapping summer/winter tires as the cone seat gets hogged out on them. (Ford, Dorman, local fastener store, all same soft material that does not stand up)

Alex.

Does anyone's yard have alloy wheels for sale? I've gone to two yards around here in the city and everything is just steelies, they got containers full of tires but not a single alloy wheel. Not sure what they do with them all, asked one of the guys and he just shrugged and said they don't have any.
I want to pick up a set for my grand marquis so I can take the steel wheels and use them for winter tires, plus I am missing 2 of the lug covers that are pretty expensive, so might as well just get another set of rims for a $100 more.

Yeah, nothing like going in for a speedo cable, and when you find the one you want, it's been cut with a torch when they took the engine/transmission out.

Worth more as scrap than to sell them as watch them ***** because they are brake dust coated or pitted.

I've not been able to go to a pick and pull in over a year.

My last visit I was after a set of seat belts. About the sixth vehicle, the roof was crunched down below the seatbacks. I opened the passenger door and there was a ****** babies blanket and that smell of a young infant.
Don't know if I'll ever go back as it still haunts me.

The one on the left looks like the one I was referring to. Mine has the yellow ring ti make it easier to hand spin too.

That *****, at this rate I swear I'd have to buy a junk panther body just for the wheels.
They want $50 on ebay for just one of the lug nut covers I'm missing :shocking:
