Hey guys I picked up a Delta DP-665 the other day, it's a 1972 model. I'm learning as I go along.

This drill press has a unique chuck. The Jacobs 633C chuck has a threaded locking collar. Some have recommend a k3 key for me; however, although the k3 and k3c chuck keys are 5/16" and have 11 splines, they are different.

I have read that some people take a k3 and use a "turned down handle" to fit into the threaded collar at the bottom of the chuck. What do it mean to turn down the handle?

I have a Craftsman DP with that chuck. It has a Jacobs #33 taper, and the collar is used to fully insert the chuck onto the spindle. The end of the chuck key handle is turned down small enough to fit one of the holes in the collar. You clamp an Allen wrench in the chuck and use the chuck key to loosen the collar for chuck removal. You should be able to find the correct key.

Cope,

Does this 3c look correct? I believe it is a homemade version.

I should've mentioned that I'd like to avoid buying one of the newer ones from amazon/ebay.

Yes it does. Here is my original from 1976. My cousin had his dad's 1946 vintage Delta, and this key fit it too. On the top view notice the "detent" on the left side of the shaft. This is spring loaded so that you can't forget the key in the chuck.

Excellent, thank you. I'm going to take some pictures of the press and make a thread on the Vintage Tools section.

You can remove the collar with a spanner or a short punch, and the ejection feature is nice but not required. Looking forward to seeing your DP.
