Jaguar Garage That Once Was

These photos I took of a friend’s extensive Jaguar collection. Walter Hill was a longtime retired Eastern Air Lines pilot had a true love for the Jag. The collection was located in a somewhat secluded area several miles from Fort Pierce, Florida. During the years I was able ride in several of the cars. For personal reasons all the cars were disposed of in 2005 via auctions. Walter passed away in January last year. Enjoy!

Nice collection, sad they got sold. Always a pity when things like that get split up.

One thing tho', there's an odd one in there. If it's a Lola then i can understand why it's there but if it's a Ford......?????

The cinder blocks got me, too. Seems like an odd, lowbrow way to support such a refined collection.

The cars themselves are stunning.

Amazing collection. I'd bet the proceeds brought several million.

I take it that you've never seen or ridden in a Ford GT40. It's known around here as a Ferrari killer... in fact, that is the original Ford GT40 which beat Ferrari at its own game. It is a super collectors item and belongs right next to Porsche, Lamborghini, and Ferrari.

This garage was featured in the first "Ultimate Garages" book. Very impressive collection, it's a shame to hear of the owner's passing.

Weren't all the original GT40s built in England? Also, that does apear to be a RHD road car.

Also, that #44...I would guess that was from the Group 44 team. Primary driver Bob Tulius???

The only "factory" GT40 I'm aware of is the 1967 Ford GT40 MK3. I literally dreamed about that car after reading a Car Life Magazine road test in 1966. On topic, I've always a weak spot for the Series II XJ-6, one of which appears to be parked next to the GT40. Of course, I stand ready to stand corrected on either count. :)

In case it floods

The cars were placed on the blocks for flooding during the Florida rainy season. The area had flood issues on occasion.

The GT40 was built in England and said to be the second to the last ever built.

The facility a test track consisting of a single straight away with circles at both ends. It also featured a grass landing strip. I only visited Walter ever once by car, it was always flying in normally in a Christian Eagle.

The GTP cars are from Group 44 racing and Bob Tullius. Bob is a good friend also. Lucky enough to have rode along in his P51 Mustang with at the controls.

With that many Jaguars on blocks, can you imagine how many broken washing machines and old sofas he had out in the yard :lol_hitti

During the 60's and 70's my family had a house a few miles from the Bridgehampton racetrack, and I would ride my bike there and sneak in anytime there was racing going on. Bob and his Group 44 was a regular competitor, (and often winner) of the sports car races there. Bob raced E Types and even an XJ sedan. The cars were absolutely amazing in their preparation. The most beautiful fabrication and design I had ever seen. It was little surprise they did so well; they were in a class by themselves. Everything on the cars were white and spotless. As a kid, I really drooled over those Group 44 cars. Never saw him race the GTP cars though.

I remember several times seeing the occasional GT40 street car parked around the track at some large event (Can am or Trans Am) driven by some spectator...more often than not it was stuck in the sand of one of the access roads. The roads around the Bridge were not exactly the place to drive something with only a few inches of ground clearance.

I suppose having them on blocks makes them harder to steal and easier to quickly service without moving them.

Amazing collection. I'd bet the proceeds brought several million.

The real D-type and the XKSS brought nearly $2m a piece.

Odd collection, in some respects, alongside peerless examples with cast iron provenance, like the two above, were several bitsas and replicas. He was probably the only person ever to chop up an XKSS in order to build a replica (the Briggs Cunningham D-type)! The 04 XJR5 is the so-called 'Salad Bar Car', a former show car which at one time lived in a restaurant.

I'm fairly confident the GT40 is a replica, with no claims of period components (unlike the very contentious XJ13), but I'll happily stand corrected.

It's a British vehicle thing.

If they aren't leaking, they are empty.

I think the Italians actually invented that - at least my Alfas had that feature built-in. No need to look at the dipstick - park in a different spot each night and if there is no oil spot under it in the morning, it's time to add oil.
Best of all, if the car ever stopped leaking the dealer would fix it for free - in or out of warranty :wtf:

As a matter of FACT yes i have, both a GT40 and a GT, and yes they are BOTH in New Zealand.

Weren't all the original GT40s built in England?

Earlier Mk.I and III cars were entirely British built, the Mk.IIs & IVs were built in America.

The GT40 was built in England and said to be the second to the last ever built.

2nd last ever built where? UK or US?

At the end of the day i view GT40s as Lolas with a boat anchor in the back. Just as the Cobras are British cars with boat anchors in the front.

Spectacular collection! What an amazing collection of amazing vehicles. My lowly 1997 X300 is pining for a visit with his stable mates. :)

I knew airline pilots were very well paid years ago, but had no idea how well!! Oh well. I also remember when gas was 49.9 cents per Imperial gallon. :lol_hitti

Sorry to hear the collection was disbanded, and of his passing. A life well lived.

Walter Hill was a neighbor in the 1970's. That Ford GT40 was Walter's airport car then. What's ashame is that Bruce Weiner from the Microcar Museum in Georgia was a lying POS and lyed to Walter about keeping the collection Walter had spent his life assembling only to split it up to make a few dollars. Walter would have never sold it to someone that was splitting it up. Bruce is a *******. Any of Walter's close living friends would not treat Bruce in a nice way. What ever miserable thing that happens to Bruce or his family are caused by Bruce
