Edit to the edit: The garage seems to have gone full cabinet shop with almost no metalwork to speak of so a name update seems fitting.

Edit:
This started as a thread on my new to me house with attached 3 car garage. Its since evolved into a generally catch all for all the stuff that I'm working on in the garage or house. The garage turned into a millwork/cabinet shop (for my own personal use) and the metal working equipment moved into the basement utility room.

Its a little bit of machining, some woodworking, and a lot of musical chairs with equipment.

Original post below.

I decided I needed more garage space, so I sold my townhouse and bought a (builder described) 3 car garage.. with attached house.

It's 20'x30' w/ 11' ceilings and is a single/ double door configuration. Not great size wise but about as good as it gets around here for a standard builder grade home.

So far I've managed to fill it up with an unorganized mess of my stuff (I should have let my wife pack it for the move.) I need to do some serious organization asap since all my machinery is still sitting in storage.

I like the house above garage concept, if it's a tall enough garage, leaves potential to put window in a bedroom, looking down on the cars. If that makes sense

20x30 is a 3 car? It's crazy what the builders call "over sized" and "3 car" garages now.

However, I always find the more space-limited garages the most interesting. It makes you find new ways to store a lot of stuff. Excited to see how this goes.

Heh.. yeah my old garage was a 18x19 two car.. two fit if you didn't need to open the doors, and as long as one wasn't a truck.

You have your work cut out for you. What do you mean when you say "machinery?" Lathe and mill, drill press, etc. or motorcycles? Big stuff will cost you one parking space for sure and even a workbench will be hard to accommodate with three vehicles. Take lots of pictures. We like challenges and lots and lots of pictures!

my "3 car" is 26 by 20 and the single stall is only 19.25' deep.

I need smaller projects and a bigger garage.

Re: My new "3" *cough* car garage.

Moved some of my machines this weekend. Unfortunately I have been too busy to organize the garage, so it's all in a disorganized pile.

Re: My new "3" *cough* car garage.

Finally had a chance to work in/on the garage this past week. I started building shelves. My plan was to run the perimeter 18-22" down from the ceiling. Shelves are 12" and 18" deep depending on location.

Progress so far..

The second item was to add attic access and flooring as well as insulate at the same time)

I have 2 of these 6x21 spaces above the garage. They are on either side of the master bedroom closet. Cold storage seemed like the best use of the 200 sqft

In an effort to make more garage space, I started moving my machine shop items into what will become my basement shop.

Looking better, but I still have a long way to go.

One of my previous homes had a 21x28 so-called "3-car" garage. No way you could park 3 cars and open the doors, and for someone who has 3 vehicles, it was a pain in the ***.

Nice use of space!! I'm gonna steal some of your storage ideas!

Re: My new "3" *cough* car garage.

"3 car garage" ... you were lied to, but I think you knew that going in. The smaller door, can anything but a SmartCar fit through it?

When we bought our house, the real estate agent (who I believe to honest and reputable) told me over the phone the house had a 2 1/2 car garage. When I arrived I questioned her about the size. She said "its longer than a normal garage 2 car garage". I agreed ... 18" longer. It wasn't her listing. I told her anyone who would put 2 1/2 car garage on the listing sheet was misrepresenting the house ... she agreed.

Anyway ... you're going to pack a ton of stuff in there. Any room for an addition? or a detached building? I like your idea for storing lumber.

Keep up the good work!

Re: My new "3" *cough* car garage.

Really coming along great! Nice you can move the fab shop downstairs to separate them. is it a walk in basement to get the bikes in and out easily? One suggestion too late is I would have painted everything white first before building the shelves to reflect the light and brighten the shadows. Otherwise that looks like its going to be a fun space to work. Show the basement shop as you get that organized too! Sub'd..

Short term plan is a 16x16 (max w/out a permit) shed for my bikes, lawnmower and misc yard tools. Long term is a 30x40 ish

Yes the basement is a walkout. The machine shop will be in the basement, I've moved my metal lathe and mill in there already.

I thought about painting first (my previous garage was painted white so I know how much it helps) bit with his one I had no time to paint before everything needed to be moved in. I could still paint all the open areas.

I'll post the basement shop pics once I clear out the mess, and get it somewhat organized

If the zoning won't allow you to go to 30x40, consider going to the municipality and asking for a change in the zoning ordinances to allow 30x40 or even larger.

Our township limited me to 600sf. I talked to my town supervisor and he supported me in getting an increase. I asked for 1500sf, told them I could live with 1200sf, and they moved from 600sf to 1000sf which is what I built.

Re: My new "3" *cough* car garage.

all these city ordinances ****... I mean if you build a nice enough shop and lets say it matches the front of the house and neighborhood jeez. I can understand if your neighbors in cali are 5 feet away or if your in a really bad cookie cutter neighborhood but man. Sounds like my moms neighborhood, they aren't supposed to have any fruit trees so no blueberry, lemon satsuma etc even in the back yard near the house. Also no palms and we live coastal.

I live in an unincorporated area thank god and have a 30x50 8 car galvanized building that is leaking in some spots but its nice to have the extra space. I wonder if you could have lift system for those bikes? I mean I have seen them for standard bicycles and can't help but wonder if you could use one of those electric lifts DIY for say 3 of the bikes so you could store them over the heavy machinery?

Good thing I never plan on parking inside..

Only way I could get my truck in was on a angle

Added some insulation to my garage doors. R9.7, 1.5" polyiso rigid foam.

Track saw worked much better than a utility knife.

I forgot I added 10 costco feit led shop lights last week. I picked the up back in November when they were on sale for $20 each. I still need 2-5 more to fill out the lighting.

Re: My new "3" *cough* car garage.

Working on adding a miter saw bench. Cleared off a 16' section of the back wall.
rps20170205_201156_703_zpsfbhljzc4.jpg

The bench is constructed out of a pile of old framing lumber that was a partition wall in my old shop. I ran all of it through my jointer and planer to make it look better and so it would be easier to build with.

Straightening the lumber paid off.

I still have a lot to do to before it's finished.

Thanks. Yeah track saws are a really nice tool to have for certain jobs. The Makita is well worth the price imho

Worked a bit more on the cabinets in between some other things. I managed to get three of the four boxes glued up.

I also managed to build a Makita sysport with some of the off cuts.

3.5L Ecoboost. No idea what's going on, though. Truck appears to be a 2011 model.

You can fit a standard length F150 in a 20' deep garage, but not to work on it. There would only be a couple inches of clearance total between front and back.

whats going on here? 5.0?

2012 ecoboost 3.5 tt. Timing chain went @ 77k. Dealer wanted 4k to fix. Chain was stretched, phasers were worn. It ended up being a bit over $900 in parts when it was all said all done.

Yeah, that was the Kicker. It would physically fit if I just about ouched the front bumper to the wall. Not really feasible for working on the engine.
