I'm like that now...seems my concrete guy is several weeks behind.....

Watch them from start to finish and pay attention to the edges that will not be covered by the building such as the aprons and door openings.

I didn't catch the fact that all of my slab on the back forty was not edged. They edged across the section where the garage door would line up and left the rest. This is the slab that will extend off the back of the building. I wish now I would have taken the time to measure the anchor bolts myself as well. Also when doing your own building erection, measure out the garage door openings from the slab corners when the form is up before the pour. Mine are both off several inches.

I'm a new member to the forum today. I'm getting ready to order a 30'x40x'14 from Olympia Steel Buildings and got super lucky to see that you're in the middle of putting the exact same size and brand of building I want to put up.

Was wondering a few things.
How has your customer service experience been with Olympia?
Did you receive the specifications for the concrete and bolt patterns?
Did you consider putting in piers only or was it slab all the way?

It has been great Mike, and welcome to the forum! Darin Skomo from Olympia gave me his numbers and I've called him numerous times. The few times he didn't answer his phone, he was calling me back before I hung up! I had many questions!

Did you receive the specifications for the concrete and bolt patterns?

I had my concrete done myself with a local contractor and draftsman.
The anchor bolt layout will be supplied with your Olympia blueprints.
The concrete blueprints put me back another $300.
Permit was a little over $100
Slab complete with anchor bolts and 10x40 slab on one sidewall
was $9000
I'm in a flood zone so I spent a lot of money on fill dirt
to elevate my slab and level my yard - $2000
Get with Olympia if you are erecting it yourself and tell them you want an erection booklet sent with your initial blueprints. This answered a bundle of questions I would have had to ask, and most importantly, it gave me a good insight to what I was facing before the steel even got here.

Did you consider putting in piers only or was it slab all the way?

I had no idea what I needed other than a 4" slab! The man that drew up my concrete blueprint and elevation knew from the Olympia building blueprints exactly what the load ratings for the columns would be and drew up the footers/piers and the rebar specs. I then took them and all of my other paperwork in triplicate to the county permitting office, paid them, and walked out with my permit and one less set of blueprints.

Update;

I have a wrecking crew coming over this Saturday to knock out as much of the walls and maybe the roof as time permits over the weekend.

Yesterday I cut 4x4's for girt supports and got both of the sidewalls spaced at 3' 9" between girts for the entire 40' length. After each wall is done, we can kick those out and use on the other two walls.

My insullation has been covered with a tarp and hopefully has stayed dry. We have had quite a bit of rain since the rolls were stacked there on the 2nd of last month.

Yota, did you say that you used an air drill to do the wall screws on your building? I hadn't considered that option, and the Dewalt screwgun I bought isn't easy to control the torque once the rubber washer makes contact and it gets mushroomed out. I noticed this while screwing down the rake angle. I do have a couple air drills.
Oh and, my 40 days was up yesterday! Oh well, Rome wasn't built in a day.

Got all four walls done this weekend just in time for the rain Tuesday! Yes, that was sarcasm. I taped over all four walls tonight so that hopefully not much water will get down between the walls and the insulation.
Gonna be next weekend before the roof gets started.

Looks great! All the screws and panels look straight too. Did the insulation add much time to the panel placement? How tight did you tension you cross cables? My instructions did not specify this.

Yes Jay, I used an airdrill for all my screws. The Milwalkee electric would keep turning after I let off the trigger so it would over torque the washers. The air drill would stop immediately and allow me to correctly seat the washers. I have developed a few leaks since I finished, and they are due to a few of the first split washers from using the power drill. Not a bad fix, but I have to locate the culprets first. Easier said then done. As far as the 40 days, I was willing to take 6 months to finish mine, but weather was cooperative.

Thanks! We pre-drilled all of the sheets so the screws would line up. The insulation is definatley a pain in the ***, but so was the foam closure! It was'nt that bad once we got a good system down on who was doing what before anything got lifted up. I wondered about the cable tension as well, but I'm guessing they are primarily for leveling purposes before sheeting and serve as added support afterwards as long as they are snugged up and not flapping around. I had no documentation on their specs either. We have to secure the door trim better and I think we were supposed to use the foam closures in the overhead door sections and we didn't.

Damn I hate to hear about the leaks! Are they in the roof or the walls? Hopefully you can go in behind them with a slightly larger screw once you find the culprets. I didn't realize that the short screws for the laps only were also slightly larger diameter. We had three screw/deck guns for the task and they work well because they have the clutch release that stops the bit when you take the pressure off. I bought a new Dewalt for the job and my buddy brought his two.

It rained like hell and the wind blew my tarps off today while I was at work. I just came in from strapping them down differently again. Gonna be a long week!

Got the roof on last weekend and finished most of the trim Monday and Tuesday by myself. I had to get a rivet gun yesterday to
finish up the peak boxes. Poured like hell night before last with no leaks!

Ordered two 10x10 sectionals from Overhead Door. May be two weeks before they come in.
Damn nice breeze comes through both doors!

I think that has been one of my greatest delay mechanisms since I began this project Yota. I put so much thought into repercussions that it consumes me and causes me to put things off. So to answer your question, I don't think I sat there at all. I went in the house after seeing everyone off, and took a shower. I'll probably be worse than my wife as far as where I want everything when I finally start moving things out there.

Overhead Door just called me while I was responding here, and they said my doors will be here a week from Tuesday. I have to make a decision on my floor coating.

That's one of the things I like about this place. Not only can we see cool shops like Jay's, but now I know I'm not alone. I thought I was the only one who does that stuff!!!

Great shop Jay. The slideshow was a good idea. That'll be a good laugh years from now between you and your buddies that helped. I'm going to try to record my upcoming build the same way. We break ground in April when the snow melts and the frost is out of the ground. Enjoy your new shop.

There were times when we all got carried away with the progress before we got any pictures of it. So I had my kids take pics whenever they came around. It is nice to have it all document with photos. Good luck with your build in April. I'll be looking forward to lots of pics!

Sorry about that, I took a couple a days off from here to get moved in. Okay, I took almost a year off from here... but I did get moved in!
The projects are overwhelming and I went and put internet in the shop that only slows me down more. Good to see some of the new builds on here.
