Anyone have any experience with on of these?

Recently picked one up from a friend who said it was bad, but he doesn’t know what is wrong with it.

Well, I plugged it up and it seems to work. Pulled a vacuum on an old timing vacuum gauge I’ve got, and pegged it past 25”.

It does blow a decent amount of oil, maybe too much, IMO.

Anyone have any first hand experience with these vac pumps?

Too much oil can make it blow out the exhaust as will turning it on its side. That is a big vacuum pump and expensive. It should pull about 10 to 25 microns vacuum. Your analog vacuum gauge is not capable of reading that accurately. I would start by draining and changing the oil. Use a high quality grade vacuum pump oil. JB black gold is good as are most of the well known brands-robin air, cps, mastercool etc. If you know someone with a micron gauge have them hook it up using copper tubing directly to the pump. It should pull down to 10 to 25 microns -29.92" hg approximately. Most systems only require evacuation to 500 microns. If it won't pull below 100 microns there is most likely a leak or the vane seals are worn. you can purchase a new pump kit for it.

He gave it to me to build my kids a vacuum chamber.

Appears to be a little overkill?

What is the best way to test this thing? It’s clearly pulling a small vacuum.

I guess the best way to test it would be to build the chamber and see how much it can pull and go from there..

I got a couple from work that were worn out. Same deal; would pull some vacuum, but nowhere near enough for HVAC evacuation. Tried to hone the pump housing a bit so the vanes would seat better, but all it did was ruin the stones on my cylinder hone. Apparently hardened steel. JB only sells the entire pump cartridge assembly, but it costs almost as much as a new pump. So there they sit in the basement.
