Jcarricks 25' x 53' Shop Build

Hey guys,

I am new to forum and just recently posted up my introduction in the "Intro" section of the forum talking about my new shop plans. Here is the first post to give you guys some background information:

Hey Guys,

I am new to the site and have joined because I am in the planning stages of building my new shop. I live in Central Oregon and my shop will be a full fab shop used to build custom suspensions, cummins conversions, restoration work and many other things. I am excited to post the progress on the build and learn as much as I can from you guys!

A little info on what the shop will be. The shop will be attached to my house (I'll post pictures of location) and, due to space constraints, will be around 27' x 65'. It will have a 14' tall door and 16' tall ceilings. Initially I was going to do two 14' tall 9' wide doors, but I am now thinking of doing one 14' x 20' door (input would be appreciated). I am going to install one 10k two-post lift right when it is built and maybe add another down the road. It will have a plethora of tools including a CNC plasma table, tube bender, horizontal band saw, press brake, MIG and TIG welders, lots of work bench space and tool storage, etc. I have not worked on the layout much yet, but I will try to do some sketchup renderings soon to give you guys a better idea of what how the shop and house will be attached and a rough idea of the layout inside the shop.

I are planning on breaking ground towards the end of February, but I will start a build thread soon outlining the planning process and dealing with the county and what not.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and please give me all the input you have! I love all the ideas I see on here.

-Jon

Here are some pictures of the house and where we will be building the shop. I have owned this place since 2012, got married last year, and now we are finally in a position that we can do some nice things to it. Along with the shop we are going to completely remodel the interior of the house, add a large back deck, repaint it and put a new roof on it. Please excuse the clutter right now, we are in the clean up phase and getting things looking nice phase .

Here is a panoramic shot of the front of the house. The shop is going to attach to the side of the house where the boat is:

I plan on bring the shop out to where it is even with the front of the garage and about 10' past the back of the house into the back yard. Here is a shot from the back yard:

If you look closely you can see there is a small deck on the left hand side of the house. During the remodel we are going to get rid of that deck and make it part of the house. Personally, I don't understand why there isn't a big deck across the back of the house already; it looks like it was built to have one. That being said, we are going to build a large deck that will go across the entire back of the house and tie into the 10' of shop that will be in the back yard. This way the shop will have nice access to the deck and a good view of the river. Oh ya, this property overlooks the river, another reason I do not understand why it didn't have a big deck earlier. We are also going to repaint the house and shop a color that fits in better with the forest like surroundings.

So back to the shop/garage side of things. Here is a shot of what I have to work with right now. It is quite cluttered with all the projects going on. Basically this garage is used to store my tools and I end up working in the driveway. Once the shop is built, all tools and shop will live in there (NO house/garage stuff) and we will build shelves in the current garage to store normal household/garage type items and park our two cars in. It will be so nice to keep cars out of the sun in the summertime and snow in the winter

Now for a list of some of the shop plans (the basics):
  • 5 220v Outlets (Need to power the 10k lift, air compressor, plasma table, TIG and MIG welders at a minimum)
  • Plenty of 110 outlets
  • Woodstove
  • Urinal
  • Deep sink
  • Very good lighting

The plan for now is to have one 10k two post lift, and area dedicated for fabrication/welding/metal working, lots of work bench space, and hopefully parking for my truck :p.

I am trying to use Sketchup to draw up plans for the shop and house, but I am not very experienced with it and having difficulties. Does anyone have and recommendations for good programs for doing this (I use a Mac) or good pointers on using Sketchup?

So if you actually read all that, thank you! I apologize for being wordy, I just want to try to give a clear picture of what I am working on. I am excited to hear your guys' input and thank you in advance for the help!

Ive got a small update on the shop build. With winter coming, I wont be able to break ground until late February, most likely. For now I am completely building the shop virtually in Sketchup. This will help me figure out where to place the lift, how everything will fit, an exact material list and cost, etc. Here is what I have so far:

Shoshone%201.0_zpses9djehf.jpg

The giant opening on the right side is where it will tie into the house. If you look at the photos in the first post you will see that side of the house. The back of the shop will go 10' into the back yard and have a sliding glass door out onto the future deck.

Shoshone%201.0%202_zpsqcnod2kp.jpg

The garage door opening is 20' x 14' with 16' walls. There is a man door on either side. The right side man door will be the main entrance. The other door will give access to the side of the shop where wood will be stored, access to the back yard, possible an overhang for yard tool storage, etc.

Shoshone%201.04_zpsrqklsn1i.jpg

Here is a view from the front right of the shop looking in. I started thinking about it, and with such tall ceilings, it makes perfect sense to me to build a loft and put the a man cave up there. Planning on a pool table, couch, TV, and small bar up against the wall that will be more of a liquor cabinet than bar. I dont know the best way to build the loft; I just did the steel I-beam to get an idea. Some input on loft design/construction would be awesome!

Shoshone%201.03_zpseagqxwva.jpg

I will continue posting pictures of my virtual build as I make progress on it. My goal is to model the completed shop with everything in it and the house with the remodel work done. If anyone wants the sketchup file to play with I'd be happy to send it your way!

Just think of your loft like building a deck inside. That's the best way I can put it.
You will have rim joists that tie to the walls, you just wont need to use flashing against the walls. Then across the front you will need support posts and a header to hold the floor joists, then your choice of decking. Since it's inside you can use the 3/4" T&G plywood or what ever you want.
Add some stairs and railings and there you have it, a loft.

Gutted72,
Thank you for the input! I will re draw that and post and update picture.

Mmclean,
The only pluggin I'm using is House Buidler which I used for doing the framing of the walls and roof. The lift and stairs were downloaded from sketchup and the rest I drew.

Good to see you on here as well Mike! I never expected an IG follower to find me on this forum, ha. I'm not sure how much I will post of this on the business IG, but this is he shop Carrick Customs will be ran out of starting towards the end of spring [emoji106]

It has been a long time coming, but this project is finally coming to life! This last summer we decided to try to sell the house, buy property and build a shop and house, but with the house not selling and a very snowy winter predicted, we decided to stay where we are for the time being.

I had plans drawn up by an architect/engineer and then spent months working with the county to get permits issued. I also found out I had to pay an additional $1300 for a Land Management Review because of my vicinity to the Deschutes River. This was so that someone could make sure the paint colors and siding type would not be an "eye sore"... Seems ridiculous to me, but there was nothing I could do but pay the money.

So far the footings, stem wall and retaining walls have been poured. I will start backfilling for the slab on wednesday, once the concrete has cured.

Here are some pics through the processes:

Looks excellent! Will there be access to the shop from the house where they tie together?

Very nice start. I love the detail in sketchup. My favorite detail so far is the lighting. Can't forget to make it so you can see in the new shop! I bet you kept that tree for the woodstove...

Code allowed the buildings to be only a couple feet apart?

No. That whole side of the house is bedrooms and bathrooms with no good place for an access, but I'm alright with that. This way it keeps things separate even though it's all attached.

There will be an abundance of lighting. That Sketchup model is an old one. I will post new screenshots of the current Sketchup drawings soon.

No, the shop is attached to the house and will share the same wall.

A lot of progress has been made lately. The slab is all done and I've almost finished all the framing. Here are some pics of the current progress:

At this point, I can't finish framing the front wall until the power is moved. I am upgrading from a 200 amp service to a 400 amp service and started setting up the new power meter base. Now the house will ran off of its own 200 amp main breaker and the shop will have its own 200 amp main breaker. Setting up 3" Rigid conduit and 60' of 500mcm wire is not an easy task though...

uc

Trusses are getting delivered this Wednesday and as soon as the power is moved I can finish framing the front wall. It's started to feel like I'm getting towards the home stretch, but now comes the fun of wiring, sheet rocking, siding, etc...

Siding and roof are done

Wood stove is installed

Wiring is finished. I already had a 200amp service to the house and was able to up it to a 400amp service. Now the house is on it's own 200amp disconnect and the shop is on its own 200amp disconnect. The shop has numerous 120v outlets, 1 30amp 240 for the lift, and 6 60amp 240 volt circuits all around the shop.
uc

Everything is insulated. I upgrade the walls and ceiling from R19 to the next step up and then decided to do blow in on the original house walls in order to keep noise from the shop at a minimum in the house.
uc

Now the drywall is almost finished and all that will be left is finish work! Finally!

Sorry for the big picture dump! I just figured I would catch this thread up to the current state of the build.

how about some pics / more info on that great looking f350. must be a great workhorse, judging by the size of the trailers in your pictures. I know it is a long process but your shop looks great! keep up the good work.
