Bought an old CJ that I plan to fix up. 1976 cj5 was my first vehicle and I’ve always been partial to them.

First order of business is repairing some rot. Not much experience so learning as I go. I already cut out some of the floors and side and have some repair panels coming. In the rear wheel wheel area there is some rust coming through at flange lines. The actual wheel well edges curved part still looks ok. To make things easier, I was going to Drill out the spot welds and cut out the side / face metal. I should the just be able to cut a flat rectangle patch and weld in. Am I going to run into problems with that, or is that a viable plan?

I'm not going to be able to help you on the body work, but I think the CJ-7 and the first extended Unlimiteds were the perfect sized Jeeps. You could carry stuff inside them, like a deer or even a moose. Current Wrangler 2drs are too wide and the 4drs are both too wide and too long.

It looks like the tub you have is in really good shape. I was bit by the CJ bug in high school. While I still enjoy seeing them, I lost my interest in owning one when just about every part for them is now made in China and no where else. Finding a quality replacement part is very difficult. From 95 thru probably 2005, I bought and parted out at least 10 CJ's. Most were basket cases, but the value was in what was still usable and many times desirable. Favorite was an 86 CJ7. Your patch should work out fine. Good luck with your project.
