I recently bought a 77 CJ5 that will be a spring project. Does any know a good Jeep message board that isn't mostly about off road or rock crawling? I'm looking for something more mechanical and restoration oriented.

theamcforum has some Jeep guys lurking around. Your 77 is an AMC product and the forum has lots of people who know AMC.

I am a member of a few (have a Cherokee) but they are all about off road and rockcrawling. Wish I could find one like your looking for. If you find one let me know!

What kind of questions do you have? I bet with all of the guys we have here someone probably knows the answer to whatever questions that come up. Does your Jeep have a 232, 258, or 304?

Those Off Road & Rock Crawling forums have some of the most knowledgeable guy's around when it comes to Jeeps.

Just about any question you can think of has been asked, so make sure to search. Once you've over 20 hours in to searching and reading, post your question. Make sure it's easy to read, grammar and punctuation will help your cause.
Don't be discouraged by the young gun's who are padding there post count... A good question will pull out the guy's who can answer, especially if you can link your sources and prove you've searched.

This from a guy who's taken a few chances on the aforementioned Pirate4x4 site...

I don't have any specific questions yet. I haven't fooled with a Jeep before. Mostly Chevy trucks and motorcycles. I am looking for a forum to do some reading to start building my knowledge base.

Nice clean CJ, pop that hood and take a few pics of the engine.

Is that rear tow hook welded on? If so, make sure the first thing you do is remove it and get a real extraction point.

That looks to be just a stock 258 I6 from the pictures. One of the best things you can possibly do for that engine is to ditch the stock carter carburetor and upgrade to either a Webber of a Motorcraft 2100. Another cheap really nice upgrade is to get a HEI distributor from a late 70's Chevy/GM 250/292 inline 6 and swap the gear off of your distributor onto it. That gives you HEI ignition which is vastly superior to your stock motorcraft setup.

IMO. Jeepforum is the best, general forum. My jeep is there. You may try the early CJ5 forum mentioned. As mentioned before there a lot of dumb a$$ kids on most of the forums. The truth is, with a few stellar exceptions, the older the jeeper the better the person/advice.
I have had everything from a 1946 CJ2A to my current TJ if you have specific questions PM me your contact info. I can talk jeeps all day but typing *****.

I'm a bit of a Jeep nut, Ive owned every platform built since 69, and Ive always owned at least on Cj since I was 16 (I'm in my 40s). One of my hobbies is buying out old dealer parts stock and reselling on ebay. Not looking to sell you any parts, but if you need any part numbers for the stuff they don't re-pop, I'm OE cataloged from 67-today. I can also provided you any parts diagrams you might need.

I too am not a ******** wheeler, more of a basic enthusiast, even though Ive wheeled every state west of the rockies, and I'm from Illinois.

I also have not found a jeep forum that I care for, Ive been on two, Ive also belonged to a couple jeep clubs.

Good luck on your restoration, you will become quite familiar with rust, I'm sure (unless you got your jeep in So-Cal or Arizona ?)

Yep, but laugh it off and they'll leave you alone. The tech they have is pretty good, ESPECIALLY all of Billavista's thesis' (theses?)

I reccomend Jeepaholics - http://www.jeepaholics.com/support/ good bunch.

thats the reason ive stayed around this board for as long as i have, most of the BS is dealt with, and the board stays on a friendly basis.

jeepgarage.org is a pretty well run site for those own Jeep vehicles. Just ignore the one jagoff mod from Australia and the rest of the staff will ensure your visits are enjoyable.

The site caters mostly to street Jeeps but does have an offroad section. Most post these days are about the new WK2, yet there are a few old time Jeep guys that occasionally post.

I've had 2 77 cj5's. That should be a 258, carter single barrel carb, ford starter, gm alternator, chrysler ignition ( gold colored box on the inner fender). AMC model 20 rear end, dana 30 front, If it's a three speed it is a t150. With the exception of the ignition, it was a good year. the starter and alternator are probably the cheapest autopart stores carry. The carb is dead reliable if rebuilt properly. I loved the 2 I had and envy your project. If you need help, I'd be glad to lend a hand.

Sounds like a mutt. :lol_hitti

AMC was always interesting to work on. +1 for Pirate, just make sure you post in the right section. :shocking:

Did you mean prestolite ? I remember those gold boxes... I remember yanking out the Prestolite Distributor/Module and dropping an older AMC/Delco point distributor in the V8s, hard to believe, but they usually ran better ! I think the older point style distributor had a better "non-emission" spark curve, and neither was HEI, so it was an unusual win.

I agree with crewchief......they expect you to spend 6 months reading every post before you ask a question......

My vote would be Off-road.com.....

And I consider myself to somewhat know what I'm talking about.....just check out the jeep build link in my signature.....

The CJ board at Jeepforum is solid. Not a bunch of pimpled teenagers there regurgitating something they read the night before. The Pirate board is also good once you filter through the web tough guys. There's a lot of good info to be found there and a lot of innovative ideas.

BTW, the stock Carter carb on that engine is a good carb. The later BBD two barrel Carter is problematic and for them an upgrade is usually a good idea. I swapped my Carter YF (same as this one) for fuel injection. The Prestocrap ignition is a good thing to get rid of. My '75 also had it and was replaced in '98 with a GM HEI. My EFI controls the spark timing now.

As clean as that one is my opinion is that it would be a shame to cut it up to make a rockcrawler out of it. Beaters are a dime a dozen and are good candidates if you really want a full blown crawler.

I used to be fairly active on the Offroad.com forums, before they got pop-up happy and I couldn't stand it any longer.

Edit: One of my CJ's

I agree CSP. I have no intention of cuting it up. The reason I bought it is because it hasn't been cut up or lifted or otherwise beat up. I plan on refurbing everything to near stock, but not too nice to use. I want to be able to ride dirt roads or mild trails and not feel like its too nice to use.
