If i read this print correctly, you have 55x45 in two attached garages, plus a garage storage room. Very nice.

We have a 40x60 detached (300 yds away) with a 30x60 lean-to open shed (2 travel trailers and a 72 hp tractor)... 4200 sq/ft garage/shop (toy and tool storage).

Our daily drivers park outside at house (Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2500HD Denali)... What is wrong with my layout! Besides about $400 annual taxes on 40 acres and structures. 2200 sq/ft house on 5 acres taxes about $2500

Epic build!!

Interesting.

If you look at the plan for the lower floor:

LowerFloor.png

There is a door (with a drop-seal) between the garage and the stair area. I could add a second door at the bottom of the stairs that is sealed, and then try to do some kind of conditioning in that area.

Is the concept of the negative pressure room that air is pulled in from both the house and the garage area via any leaks and then vented directly outside? That would keep air from seeping upstairs via that conduit.

Jeff

Jeff, I just spent the last 20 minute one finger typing a detailed response, then went to grab you a link - come back and ****!, it was all gone. Talk about irritating, let me get thru the day and I'll fire up my puter to answer your question thoroughly so I don't start the year off having a coronary.

And happy New Years, Cam.

Yea, the lower garage and lower shop are my play areas, however the lower shop (to the right side) is about 5 feet lower than the garage next to it (and thus has a 5 foot taller ceiling. There is also the upper garage that is 35x22, but that is really just for my wife to park her car, and I'll probably put two cars in there.

Your setup sounds awesome. I would dig 4200sq feet of just shop space!

Happy New Year to you as well Cam! I hate when that happens, and it has happened to me a number of times. I am in the habit of composing longer messages in notepad before I post just for that reason!

Cheers!

Update 14 - We just returned from a week in Hawaii, and the concrete guys finished the lower garage floor as well as the upper garage.

The upper garage floor was pretty straightforward, although it ended up being a bit thicker than originally planned. It is right a 6 inches at the garage door, but about 9 inches thick at the house. No downside other than a tad extra cost.

IMG_5483.jpg

The lower floor garage turned out great, with two drains.

IMG_5446.jpg

At the interface of the garage door we added a small depression to serve as a catch for water and snow dragged in my cars.

IMG_5455.jpg

We did the same technique for the shop floor, which is completely flat. The asphalt outside this door will slope away from the shop, and this lip has a slight slope towards the door.

IMG_5475.jpg

We also have the second round of galvanized steel beams delivered and installed. These hold up the rear deck.

IMG_5442.jpg

IMG_5477.jpg

Some wood for the framers was also delivered…
IMG_5451.jpg

IMG_5453.jpg

And the framers got a start on the sill plates on the top of the foundation. The sill plates are done in a way I have not seen before. The pressure treated board against the concrete is a 3x6 (so called 3x Sill), and I expect that is for shear requirements. The second and third boards encapsulate the bolt, which has a steel plate instead of a simple washer. The sill plates are this way for the entire house. I suppose it is robust.

IMG_5469.jpg

As an aside, I have been using my new GoPro7 for some of the wide angle pictures of the build, and it works well. It is also waterproof, so while we were in Hawaii I had a chance to test it out.

GOPR1665.jpg

I was able to catch some video at 2.7K/120hz, which works well for slow-mo shots!

Hope you all had a fantastic New Years! I am looking forward to getting the project done by the end of 2019!!

Update 15 - A few walls appear..

With the framers onsite and a bit of wood delivered, we have a few walls.

This perspective gives a good view of the shop (lower), and the garage (up from that). You can see the open pass thru between the garage and the shop as well.

DJI_0108b.jpg

GOPR1762.jpg

This gives a good perspective of the first floor, as it sits on the top of those steel beams (the joist run between the beams on hangers).

You can see the drains in the lower garage floor, as well as the opening between the lower garage and the shop.

That shop space and the view it will have is incredible. Also, I have to say that the use of a drone in documenting this build really takes this thread to the next level. One of my favorite threads on this site to date.

Nice update.
From the looks of it you are going to have some amazing view from the living quarters above the shop / garage areas.

Yea, the drone really does help get perspective, and it is easy to do. I'm using a DJI Mavic Pro that almost flies itself. Once I get to full framing I'll probably make more use of the GoPro7 to do internal wide angle shots.

Update 16 - A few more walls

A few more walls have appeared, although progress has been slightly slowed by significant rain and cold. The next week looks pretty clear and surprisingly warm (>50 degrees), so things should pick up.

More on the Subaru build please!!!
Yes, more info on the billet block build please.

Sure!

The Subaru build is an engine for my 2008 STI. It is a 2.5L flat-4 engine. Most Subaru builds revolve around upgrading parts inside the factory case, and it is not common to actually upgrade the engine case. Just a few years ago a company in Australia started working on a complete billet aluminum EJ257 case. (they also make a billet VR38). It is machined from a two solid pieces of 6061, and it has significantly improved contours with much thicker material in many locations.

WH7Q0135.jpg

WH7Q0166.jpg

This case has the equivalent of a '4 bolt main' setup, as there is an extra set of fasteners to help with case clamping.

WH7Q0169.jpg

IMGP1248.jpg

All of the threads are rolled instead of cut for extra strength. For those not familiar, that hole there is for the wrist pin to go in, as you install the wrist pins into the piston/rod after it is in the engine.

IMGP1249.jpg

IMGP1251.jpg

Internally, there is a Manley Crank, IAG/CP Pistons, Manley Rods, a custom IAG Steel O-Ring Head interface, and 14mm head studs.

The sleeves are Darton DDI2017 sleeves which use their Top Fuel material.

I am going to start out with a Precision 6870 using the ETS tubing and ETS 4” intercooler.

You can see the groove in the top of the sleeve. There is a steel ring that fits into that groove and is compressed into the head gasket.

IMGP1252.jpg

IMGP1255.jpg

The heads are Cosworth heads with Cosworth 274 cam, valves, springs, and Ti retainers.

IMGP1264.jpg

IMGP1268.jpg

I’m using IAG fuel rails, with Radium dampeners, Injector Dynamics 2000cc injectors, and my own custom fuel lines.

IMG_4094.jpg

This is where I am right now, with the heads attached, the oil pump, pickup, and baffle installed, water pump installed, and some of the timing system install.

IMG_5506.jpg

Today I need to check the valve/bucket lash, then finish up the cam cap install and get ready to do the timing belt.

It is a fun build, and I really like doing Subaru engines. They are super easy to assemble and have great cross chassis compatibility. This little guy should be somewhere in the 900whp range (so probably around 1000 crank hp), which isn’t bad for a 2.5L 4 cylinder. The car is around 3200lbs, so pretty light in contrast to my GTR.

Wow! That engine is crazy.
I like it.
Thanks for posting the pics.
You mention the engine has a lot of cross chassis compatibility.
I wonder how much work it would take to fit it into a BRZ / FRS.

Well, putting an EJ in a BRZ is certainly possible, but I think most people just work on beefing up the FA20D engine, as it is possible to get that engine over 500whp with a reasonable budget. The EJ is bigger, and the bell housing in the BRZ isn't compatible. There have been a few people that have done it, but custom fabrication is needed.

The FA20D engine in the BRZ has both direct and port fuel injection, which gives you lots of options for fuel delivery. You would probably need to run a standalone ECU in a BRZ to drive an EJ, and that would require some CAN bus magic.

Great build. I’m starting a shop and house at the moment and your pics inspired me to dust my mavic off and take some pics of the site this weekend.

Have you ever done the nha race at Mary hill? We did it in 2016 and 2017. Might hit it up in 2019 if the weathers looking good.

That block has had very nice machining done to it, looking at the cutter paths and I can tell they had a very good NC programmer that developed the programs for them.

I have not done any of the NHA races there, just some private days, but they certainly look like a blast! I may take my GTR to one this year.

Indeed, per block it is a bit over 50 hours of CNC time, plus of course an anodizing in the middle somewhere. Excited to get it running.

Another vote for "you must do it" - a ton of fun. This is a video of one of my runs this year in an open wheel Formula F car.

Cheers,

Is that the nha event? The finish line at the Nha events we did was a couple corners up.

We did a 1:54 on the full hill.

Thanks for al the info. Didn't know about these billet blocks. Had to ask a friend (Subaru technician) the other day, more about them.
These pictures are just engine p0rn!

Please do show us the whole car, and the GT-R! :)

Yes, thats NHA - our datalogging was just going crazy (due to a loose wire as it turns out) which stopped the camera early.

Yea, you don't see a lot of them around in part because most Subaru guys aren't looking to spend $15k just on the shortblock. I'll dig up some more pictures.

I can see the engineering excellence that went into design and manufacturing of that block. Looks exceptional!

It is a nice component, now I just need to get everything together and see how it performs!

Update 17 - A bit more wall, and some shear..

It was a slow last few weeks due to weather. Some of the floor joist i-beams were delivered, along with some other joists and boards.

IMG_5519.jpg

My daughter Audrey likes them…
GOPR1814.jpg

You can see they have started to put up plywood, and due to wind they will probably try to get most of that done before starting on the joists.

With Audrey to scale, the shop certainly looks to be a good size.

Jeff, I grew up in Portland (east of Gresham, actually), but left 30 years ago for a job. Have been in Texas for 22 years after an 8 year stint in the Bay area.
What a great piece of property inside the city limits - really hard to find. I'm subscribed to follow your build.
LSXCam - I'd trade the Texas property tax increase over CA for no income taxes in Texas in a heartbeat (and, obviously, did)!

Update 18 - Walls, and the start of joists.

DJI_0154A.jpg

Most of the lower walls are complete and sheathed.

The I-joists for the upper floors are being installed now, connected across from the steel beams.

The shop is looking good. 14.5 foot ceilings feel a lot taller than my current 12 foot ceilings. I am thinking I will need a forklift.
