We just call them gas cans in Texas. How did they get to be called Jerry cans anyway?![]()

It's a specific type of gas can...I don't know anyone who keeps fuel for a lawn mower in one.
The five gallon can as we know it was developed by the Germans during WW II. The British colloquially called the Germans "Jerries", hence the cans they captured were called "Jerry Cans". Recognizing a good idea when we saw one, both us and the British copied the "Wehrmachtskanister" into our own versions.
