Jerry Can Storage?

Hey, wondering what other people did to store their jerry cans..

I have about 7 of them, and I'm really not sure where I should put them. some of them will be filled with fuels, so perferably something to build that is easily accessible.

if they have fuel then I would prefer to store them in a steel cabinet

Steel flammables cabinet would be first choice followed by garden shed followed by as far away from the welder / grinder as possible.

Are they all the same size? If so I would think that you could build a shelf of some sort to at least group them together and in one place instead of strewn all over the garage like my dad does. Drives me nuts.

I keep the ones with fuel (straight and mixed) in the garden shed. I bought one of the gas-pump types and love it. It works very well. Thinners and other flammables I keep in a "Paint/no fire" corner of my shop. But now I'm gonna put a metal box in that coner to keep them in....thanks.

We just call them gas cans in Texas. How did they get to be called Jerry cans anyway?

I have a steel cabinet all the jerry cans, paint cans, flammable solvents, etc., go in. It's not a true flammable cabinet, but it stops sparks from hitting it.

The five gallon can as we know it was developed by the Germans during WW II. The British colloquially called the Germans "Jerries", hence the cans they captured were called "Jerry Cans". Recognizing a good idea when we saw one, both us and the British copied the "Wehrmachtskanister" into our own versions.

It's a specific type of gas can...I don't know anyone who keeps fuel for a lawn mower in one. I do know some 4wd enthusiasts who use them.

My father has used one for probably 45+ years for lawnmower fuel.

I would, as suggested, put them in a shed outside. Maybe one of the inexpesive small plastic types.

Yeah, I know what kind of gas can you are talking about. I have a couple of them. It's the kind you used to see strapped on the back of the old military
jeeps. Looks like the term is being used here to apply to all types of gas cans.
