I have a 1hp Jet band saw that I bought new about 20 years ago. I used it a couple of times for maybe an hr total. It has sat in my cellar for all these years until I built my work shop, then it sat in there unused until last year when a co-worker asked me to cut out a Pinewood derby car for his son. When I went to use it, the motor would not turn over. It would just hum and the shaft would go back and forth until the breaker would trip. I would hit the on switch and spin the fly wheel with a small round dowel until the motor would spin on its own. I let it run for quite a while but every time I would restart it, I would have to keep spinning the fly wheel until it ran on its own. I was going to work on it this past year but have been just to busy. Its Pinewood derby time again and now I can't get it to spin on its own. Are there any electric motor experts out there with some advice ? I will probably take it apart and see if there is corrosion in the motor and go from there. Thanks, Ed.

^^ concur -- your start capacitor is not working. Take the capacitor cover off, check the wiring and/or replace the capacitor. Luckily, it is the cheapest/easiest thing to fix on a motor besides bearings or a loose wire.
