Jet drill press runout and adjusment

So I bought a new drill press.

It is a jet JDP - 20 MF. So far it's a pretty nice machine and measuring the run out and it measures about .012.

It has a split head so that the quill run out can be adjusted, so they say.

T In trying to tighten up the run out a little, I have found at the quill set screw does not turn.

So I have a couple of questions, first is .012 a lot? It tends to bother me when I use smaller bits, and I would like to see it about half that if I could, and secondly has anyone ever adjusted the quill bearing on this model jet?

That adjustment doesn't affect runout, it's to take up excess clearance as the quill or housing wears, unlikely to help unless the quill is really banging around in the head. Most likely it is the chuck, or the spindle, or the bearings. Being a 20", does it have a slot to knock the chuck and arbor out of the spindle? If it does, knock it out and measure the runout at the bottom of the taper.

Jim, Jim, Jim,

I hate to say it but you're right.

I cleaned the morse taper and the inner spindle and now have .0023 run out. It sure didn't take much to affect that.

I was told by a Jet tech today to adjust that screw. I wasn't sure at the time that they knew what they were talking about and this confirmed it.

Thanks for the information.

It was pretty much my bad. I use the same morse taper on my mag drill. I didn't guess so little dirt would throw it out so far.

New SOP. Clean the shank.

So what is the run out now? .0023? After you cleaned? Looking for a drill press myself and would be interested in evaluating a used one especially if you could adjust run out

Yes, after cleaning it's just over .002.

I've not messed with the quill further.
