Ok, so I'm trying to encourage my wife to have at least one hobby to counter balance my eleventy hobbies. I got her some beads and beginners jewelery making stuff at christmas time, and now I would like to build her a bench which incorporates a light. Google didn't have much in the way of innovative ideas, I was hoping there might be someone who does something similar and could give me some protips. Due to space constraints, it will be a topper to sit on an existing desk. I thought about lining it with felt? seems like a good plan, kinda like having carpet under a work bench to keep dropped items from flying at the speed of light into the great tiny screw graveyard yet to be found. Maybe something to organize beads, and possibly the few tools she uses.

any ideas welcome, this is a low budget kinda deal to.

this is no lie here. i was at a mall about 2 months ago, and the lady who was a jeweler had her little "store" in one of the middle aisles of the mall and her organization boxes were tool boxes, the harbor freight ones. The US general 13 drawer roller. she had 2 of them, i thought it was pretty unique

My girlfriend is trying to "steal" my newly acquired wooden machinists tool chest for her jewelry hobby.

I was thinking a small kobalt box maybe. She doesn't really have that much stuff yet. I dont want to encourage a spending spree for something she'll probably choose wine over in the end.

Simple top could be just 1/2" plywood, covered in felt or low pile carpet. Maybe some oak edging to make it look nice. Coupe of tackleboxes for tools and pieces. A magnifing lamp would come in handy.

And then if it were to become a serious upgrade, then you vould upgrade to a dedicated bench, nice tool box, etc.

My wife does a lot of jewelry work, started with beading and has grown into lampworking and silver work. For starters, a table topper that is 1/2" ply with a raised edge around the perimeter will work. Definitely line it with felt. You could actually use homasote as the base so she can also put tacks / pins into it. A lamp that clamps onto the table is really all she needs. For storage, the drawer boxes, or the snap shut compartment boxes are great.

For reference, my wife's shop is now the upstairs of our garage and is about 450 square feet. Be careful what you wish for.
