What's the group's consensus on the USA SO-Williams tools you can get on Amazon and elsewhere versus the old postwar stuff? I have nice set of 1/2" from about 1948 that I use all the time. I want to add on a complementary 3/8" set but I'm not sure exactly how I want to do that.

New USA Williams Sockets are great. They look just like the Snap on Ones.

I bought a big set of 1/2" chrome deep 6 pts. off of amazon about two years ago. They were Taiwanese, and they are very nice. I haven't used them enough to declare that they do or do not crack when going after the stuck-est nuts, or that they round off bolts or not, but my general impression of them is that they're very nice, like much from Taiwan anymore.

The markings/number size on each socket wasn't rolled in with a stamping press type operation, but a lot of little dots, presumbly with "laser beams." It's okay. It's not great, but we all know what brands to go to for that.

I paid $66ish, plus $10 shipping. Price is a little higher now. Still a very good value.

I ordered a 6pt 3/8" set recently. Williams USA for Metric Deep and Shallow, SAE shallow, but I couldn't find any SAE deep made in USA. I went with SAE deeps from Williams Taiwan. The chrome is slightly different on the USA vs Taiwan. The Taiwan ones seem nice enough.

It looks like that set is a better deal, even after shipping, on Tools Delivered.

The 6 point are all Taiwan made, not USA like the 12 point.

That is not in any way accurate. :shocking:

There are two separate lines, the USA (Snap-On) sockets, and the Taiwanese (Blue Point). Easiest way to tell the difference is the part number for the USA tools are a mix of letters and numbers, while the Taiwan tools are all numbers. There are more Taiwan only 12 point sets than USA (hence why I have a 3/8 deep metric 12pt set)

Here's two USA made 3/8" 6 point shallow sets, as an example:

WSB-13HRC - Williams SAE 3/8 Drive Shallow Socket Set, 6 Point, 13 Piece
MSB-20HRC - Williams Metric 3/8 Drive Shallow Socket Set, 6 Point, 20 Piece

Please do a little research before condemning a brand due to your own ignorance. It's the internet age, everything is available at your fingertips.

^^^ Yes. I guess I made a blanket statement, not an accurate description. My apologies. I was turned away because the 6 point 1/2 metric set is foreign.

Not a problem, it happens. I really do wish Williams would do more to distinguish the USA from the import tools.

You do appear to be right that they don't offer a 1/2" drive metric 6pt set, I never noticed that before.:wtf:
