After years of digging through piles in my garage to find pliers or a screwdriver, I decided it was time to get organized. I knew a slat wall system of some sort was the right approach for the walls but, there remained a significant amount of research to do on accessories and comparisons between the different vendors. Cabinets and storage also required a lot of research because it needed to perform well and also look great. Flooring required research as well. There are quite a few vendors and types of flooring out there and I would be stuck with whatever I chose so I needed to pretty sure my selection was correct.

I live on the Space Coast of Florida, as I write this, it is 43 degrees outside. Over the summer, it hit 100 degrees and maybe over for a day or two. I’ve seen the low temperature around 32 and the high around 104 in the 16 years I have been living here. The garage faces north so I do not get any direct sunlight to speak of.

I’ve broken this down into four parts:

Section 1: Flooring Part 1 and Part 2
Section 2: Slat Wall Part 1 and Part 2
Section 3: Slat Wall Accessories
Section 4: Floor Items, Lighting, and Other

I will try to list any pros or cons when I have them and provide my costs for each item.

And we’re off…

Slat Wall Accessories: Ahhh. Floor is done, slat wall is done. Now I just need to hang stuff up. Piece of cake. Not. I had a lot of **** to hang up and it was difficult finding a good place to even start. Each item had to be thought about. What type of hook was best for each item? Where, exactly, would each item be placed? Did I have enough room to group similar items? Enter the Gladiator GarageWorks GAWA24SKRH Accessory Kit! An outstanding place to start because it provides a variety of hooks and even storage bins and a mesh bag. Here’s a list of everything you get with this kit:
One Mesh Basket, 1 Deep Hook, 2 Big Hooks, 2 Tool Hooks, 1 Utility Hook, 2 Twin Hooks, 1 Wide Hook, 1 Scoop Hook, 1 J & L Pack (8 hooks), and 1 Small Item Bins Pack (6 bins).

One accessory kit was not going to get the job done though and I knew I would need a lot more. I encourage you to order the accessory kit ahead of doing your wall. When you have finished putting in a thousand screws, you will probably want to immediately put something on the wall. When I finished my west wall, I had nothing and it kind of pissed me off and left me a little unsatisfied after all my hard work.

A total of $643.88 spent on all hooks, shelves, and anything else that attached directly to the wall.

Some Gladiator items were packed very well while others were not. All three 48” shelves arrived with damage as shown in the next couple of pictures. Have to straighten out all these damaged areas and, for me at least, it is not possible to get them back to a factory spec.

The 30” shelves were packed the same but then they had placed the standard box inside of a larger box. Both 30” shelves arrived without damage.

I had no problems or issues with any Gladiator item other than the shelves. They need to improve their packaging for those items.
The final walls (well, they are never really final are they?) are shown in the following pictures.

One item not in the above accessories list is the Craftsman Wall-mount Wet/Dry Vacuum. I love this thing. Remote control is even handier than I thought it would be. I picked it up for about $98.

South wall: This is prior to installation of the shelving at the bottom of the wall seen in other pictures. 37” sound bar mounted above work bench. I linked it with my old iPad for garage tunes. Will eventually get a TV and mount it above the sound bar.
