Now im getting the door prepped for the install of the atlas 8000ext. We removed the Genie opener and installed a liftmaster 8500. Next step is to finish clearing the garage and then tear down the loft space above and remove the old beam holding the old opener in place.

Reminds me of my old shop, you'll have plenty of challenges in an old block shop.
Do you plan on keeping those storage areas?

Best of luck and keep us posted!

Yea, screwing things into the block wall will be more of a pain. The storage areas need to come down in order to fit the lifts.

Some more progress:

Got the opener installed. Removed the old beam, started demo on the lower loft and middle shelf, and installed a third light.

Good progress Joe!

What are your plans for the walls, paint? One of my future projects is to install new garage doors with openers.

That is some odd construction with the course on every other course of block. I second the motion, we need pics of the outside of the house and garage to see what is doing. You are off to a great start.

I like the ceiling height. Reminds me of my last cinder block garage.

How much clearance under the open garage door now?

I measured 122inches between the door and floor so that should be pretty good.
I was thinking of painting the walls but i was also thinking of parging them smooth not sure which way ill go yet. Heres some more before pictures when it was full of **** lol.

And an old pic of the outside i painted the door since this was taken.

Parging or skim coating is probably no more work and will look more finished when done. Painting block isn't a "one and done" thing....

Thanks for the advise wasfast, we'll see how things go.

I made some more progress tonight the loft is pretty much gone. Things are easy to take down when they aren't built well lol.

All cleaned up:

I may leave the shelf but we'll see, also gotta clean up all the loose wires still.

That carved out section in the lower back wall is a bit strange. Any ideas on why?

Given that winter is right around the corner, that may make painting or skimming tough if it's too cold. One other option is to put furring strips on the walls and sheet over. It can also give you an option to insulate if you want.

Im assuming the previous owner drove into the wall with their car. I'd like to avoid adding anything to the walls since its so very tight as is. The walls aren't a huge priority right now just a nice to do lol. I would also like to fix that part of the wall before doing anything with paining or parging.

Well here they are:

Damn, talk about efficient use of space. THose things are PACKED in there.

Only thing I wonder is how easy is it going to be to work on the cars with minimal space to the sides. Are these strictly for storage?

The way it tends to go is that if you don't coat the walls and/or ceiling when it's empty, you're unlikely to do it later with everything in there. Lots of moving stuff if you do it later.

Yepp idea is turn 2 garage into 4 while being able to do minor tasks such as oil changes, exhaust etc.

I wont be adding much in there its too tight probably tool box and compressor need the rest of the space free for cars. its tight especially with a full size sedan and a 1/2 ton truck with an 8ft box needing to fit.

Got 3 of 4 cars to fit so far. Still playing with the configuration

Well its pretty much done now, got all 4 cars to fit, it's quite tight but not too bad considering. So far I am quite happy with the lifts they work well, I may add some lights to the underside of the runways at some point in the future.

Also since there's not much room I can't have the door open much more than it does so I think I'll install some C-clamps on the track to provide a little backup in case the motor fails. Going to test how that works once I bring the cars down. If that doesn't work I'll drill some holes in the track and install a hard stop of some sort.

Is this primarily for storage or is this for daily use? That looks so tight that I'm not sure it is realistic to use daily without damaging something.

It's my opinion that a previous owner notched out that wall intentionally, in order to make a bit of additional room for something to fit inside the closed garage. Possibly a dedicated piece of equipment, or perhaps a really long vehicle like a hearse. Either way, it makes me think of "What's He Building In There?" by Tom Waits...
