John Deere OTC tool boards

Hi everyone,

My dad and I just bought 10 OTC tool boards filled
with John Deere specialty tools, and I would say
they are all 80-90% complete. We think they are
worth quite a bit of money since they are so rare
and getting fairly old. Does anyone collect these
or know more about them, such as how many total
boards were made for Deere, a tool list for each
board, etc.? I have contacted OTC to see if they have lists of these boards and the tools that were on them. Any info about these would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Total boards made, how many dealerships were out there? Ten thousand, fifty thousand? What models?

My old shop had them as most older Deere shops. Not that rare, especially if they are for New Generation tractors. Could also be for lawn equipment or even snowmobiles.....

The boards should list the Deere tool number on it (if i remember correctly).....go to a deere dealer and talk to the service manager.

Pictures would help.

they could be worth a lot or very little. i know there was a whole bunch of tools specific to the 8850 4wd tractors that had a john deere v8 diesel. i think most of them have been junked by now and every dealer probably had a set even though they probably only sold 1. i am pretty sure they had it tore down at least once. those tools would be nearly worthless.

as said they could also be lawn and garden or snowmobile. check with a dealer, they would know.

Like others have said, most dealers had them. I've worked for 1 ag shop & 3 lawn & garden shops. Only one of the LG shops had tool boards, though they do have deere specialty tools. The ag shop had boards. The ones you have could also be from a construction shop. Without part numbers there is no way of knowing what you have. And without that, no way to determine its worth.
Anymore, tool boards aren't that common for the new stuff. Deere requires dealers to purchase certain tools to be able to sell new models. So these days, lots of dealerships order the tools, and them stick them on shelves or maybe in something like Stanley Vidmar cabinets. And yes, Deere does monitor the sales of who buys those tools. You can get 1, or maybe 2 of a model without getting the tools, but that's it. Displaced_hokie works for mother deere, maybe he can elaborate more on this.

That is not true. You don't have to purchase Deere tools... I work at a large JD dealer and we only purchase tools we need to service a tractor. If its not needed its a waste to have...

We never used the actually boards, just rows and rows of peg board. The the right guy, curtain tools maybe worth something.

There are avid John Deere, IH and Cat collectors that will snag any of the genuine accessories that are marked w/ the brands they chase; without pics, can't tell if the OTC tools you picked up have any of those markings. But if so, the J-D collectors will eventually find you; surprised that you haven't already heard from any of them on this board.

I know when they released a new gator in 2011, we were required to buy a couple specific tools before we could get a 2nd gator to sell. I've been at deere dealers since 2004.

Oh yes, JD can withold shipment of a product if the recommended tools have not been purchased and the proper training not completed.

In terms of special tools and tool boards...I think I may have seen some, but that practice ended years ago. Like in the 80's, maybe 70's.

We see consumer ag, construction and consumer products and don't carry special tools for anything but the ag machinery that requires it. So I don't know what the deal is for you but it sounds like your desler got screwed lol!

no matter what the tools are or what the boards are, I'm going to guess that being Deere products is all it takes to make them collectible.

every dealership that does warranty work is required to have a certain minimum of required tooling, along with training. if said tools or training is not completed, the dealer will not be paid for the warranty work... as that said dealer is not qualified by the dealer contract they signed to become said dealer...
