Joining #2 Cable in a box

I want to join an indoor run of 4X#2 cable to run outside underground. The underground cables will be seperate, and going in a 2" grey PVC to the garage.

At the junction, there will be a box (indoors). I have a few questions about this junction:

1] How big does the box have to be, and should it be a particular type?
2] What method is used to join/splice the #2 wires?

1]I'd go with a 12x12x4(minimum) Nema 1 box.
