Working on this 3 legged walnut planter. Would a glued joint in the middle be enough to hold the weight? Can you think of another method or possibly another joint that would be more suitable? Also I stumbled across Doug Thompson metalcraft video on how to equally space 3 legs in a circle video attached for those who are interested. Thanks.

There's too much end grain there - with biscuits or mortise and tenon, might be OK. Or some sort of metal fastener, drawbolt etc.. And you might be able to conceal a metal fastener from the bottom.

I don't know how heavy your planter will be, but here are a few ideas: 1: pocket screws, but there might not be enough space for all 3 directions. 2: Add a 3 or 6 sided block in the center to attach to or attach through. 3: as Paulsomio suggested, a 3 legged metal plate (similar to the center of a Mercedes logo) under the braces screwed into the brace from the bottom would be the best idea for maintaining the original design appearance.

How are you attaching the center pieces to the uprights?

Just a glued end grain joint is most likely not strong enough.

If you are already committed to the existing center pieces, that means adding some sort of connection. Dowels, biscuits, mortise and tenon (floating tenons at this point), etc.

Planter stand to me means water is involved. Use water resistant or waterproof adhesives, Titebond Type 2 or Type 3 at least.

Same consideration for the attachment of the legs to the center pieces, add dowels or biscuits or tenons.

Don't use the oxy-acetylene torch to try and braze or weld it though. 😆 Or to go all shou sugi ban on it. :lol_hitti
