OK, I posted the 6" 54 Jointer/Planer I picked up last weekend, and it is a project. Mostly a cosmetic project, as most all the working parts seem to be in fine working condition. a lot of rust however.

I'm planning on completely stripping it down and stripping paint and rust off and repainting. I'll document progress here, as I go, so there may come times when this thread gets slow...

One BIG decision that is coming up fast is what color/texture to paint it?

This may also translate to other tools the need a cosmetic face lift, and at least some will be this winter's projects. (Restoring my new-to-me 1954 5 drawer craftsman roller, inspired me...)

That '54 roller is Grey hammer tone (It's original color), as are the two Powr Kraft rollers I have bolted back to back under my Radial arm saw, and my WWII Navy 24 drawer ship board box is in the process of becoming. (Well, some are two tone, with black drawers.)

I also have waiting to be refinished: a late 30's Atlas/Craftsman Drill press, 1973 Wilton (USA!... I think...) Cutoff Band Saw, my Parker bench vise (Again), My welding bench vise (Again) My Big DP (Mill) vise, an old Craftsman Band Saw, (Original color is Blue) and my Clausing "Mini Mill" to name a few.

I'm not planning on every tool I have being color matched, as I have a couple of other tool boxes that are red, or red/black, and of course there are the brown wrinkle finish Kennedy's...

So go for most of it in Grey hammer tone? Do what feels good at the time? Shoot for original colors only? :headscrat

I have to make a decision soon, at least for the Jointer and it's stand...

It would e easier if I didn't see so many Imported tools in Hammer tone...

FYI as a reference, in the past I always went with "tool Grey" and it goes on easy and is durable. All the tools I made (Cherry picker, Engine stands, Hydraulic press, etc...) , and some I simply refinished back in the day simply got this treatment.

I'm open to ideas...

Back to the Jointer: Here is the Jointer "As Found":

Even uglier underneath:

It came with the Optional roller casters; Can they be saved?

PB Blaster to the Rescue? I may need to leave these in during the Electrolysis...

Starting the Electrolysis. Spa chem, a Battery charger, a bucket, and some "sacrificial" Material.

YUMMY! I scrape off the accumulated crud off with a bit of plastic occasionally, if only to keep it from coming over the top.

First part ready to paint:

I need to get my hands on a flat plastic tray about 36" wide and near a foot deep for the big parts. I have some rebar I can make a sacrificial grid from...

To Be Continued!

Spa Chen is 100% Sodium Carbonate, and Baking Soda is Sodium Bicarbonate, and both are Alkaline, so I doubt any/much different. all you need is an Alkaline solution. Lots of things will get you there. I've just always use it...

Sears sold that same jointer for a number of years and changed the color several times - they were sort of a dark grey/green, then grey, then gold. There's a picture thread of Craftsman drill presses here someplace that has some good examples of the colors that were available (the drill presses as well as most of their stationary power tools followed the same paint schemes. I have the same jointer, although mine didn't come with the fancy stand.

Do you (Or anyone else) have a link or thread No for that thread? I'm definitely interested!
