Joist questions / help

Recently acquired a new property with an unfinished shop out back. The building itself is a 56x36 with 18' ceilings and 2x6' frame. Looking to put a mezzanine in the back of 24x36. Doing some research on joists and it seems I'm going to be stuck going with a single post and 18' joists with a beam in the centre or be right on the limit of engineered 36' joists for floor loading. As I plan to have the mezzanine be a gathering spot for watching F1 and drinking beer this means I'd like to be well within a safe load limit.

Has anyone done something similar with wood construction? Any opinions or feedback?

That's a big deck, youre gonna wanna seriously strengthen the side walls before even using the beam and 18' joists. Double up all studs and then a pocket stud under each joist, and even then id be leery. Id want an engineers opinion before trying the 36 footers with no beam, those side walls are gonna want to bend inward. Probably double up ceiling joists too..

This is serious construction although not difficult IF IT IS DESIGNED CORRECTLY ! The biggest MISTAKE is thinking you can put up some ledger boards and just attach the joists to them.

Is this an interior mezzanine or outside deck?

If outside elevated deck it is a 60psf live load.

Dont span them 36', turn them 90 deg and span the shorter distance and have a steel or LVL at the outside edge. 36' will be bouncy and also deflection would control. Your spending money so its not sagging.

Have been in touch with local truss company and they recommended a few options. Will look into steel beam as well.

Will put together a build thread when the project hits the road in June.
