Hi all! I've posted a few times here now and figured it was time to properly introduce myself.
As you can probably tell from my username, my name is Jeff Harbert. I've lived in NC for just over five years now after spending almost a decade in the Seattle area. My GF and I recently bought a house on an acre of land. The previous owners made a number of modifications to the house, but holy **** were they cheap about things. Not to mention they left nearly everything only about 90% done. So, there's a lot the house needs done to it. It's a fixer-upper, but only because the previous owners didn't get much finished. The house itself is actually in pretty good shape.
I'm hoping to break ground on my detached 24x30 shop in late spring. I've done a lot (make that A LOT) of negotiating with myself about what I want in a shop and have finally settled on a design. After I did that I found almost the perfect plan online. You can see it here: http://www.coolhouseplans.com/details.html?pid=chp-43119&FoundID=2&sid=chp1
Here's a pic of the exterior:
The only mods I want to make are: Fill the dormer with windows; move the man door to the opposite corner, which will place it just in front of the stairs to the upper floor; delete the right hand garage door; move the left garage door a couple feet to the right. The shop will be long enough that I can put a project car on casters to shove it up against the back wall and still have plenty of room to work.
The bay in front of the lone car door will have a flush-mounted BendPak P-6F lift. I initially wanted a 2-post lift, but that required taller walls or other design mods. After thinking about the kind of automotive work I'll be doing, I decided to go with the P-6F instead. This will let me get away with only 8ft side walls. (BTW, making the decision about the lift is what made everything else fall into place. When the lift is down, that area is still 100% usable. Can't say that about a 2-post lift.)
The upper floor will be a multipurpose room - home gym, extra storage, etc. I also want to wall off one corner for an office.
I have a Google profile setup if you want to know more about me: http://www.google.com/profiles/jeff.harbert. There you can find all my other online activities. I use Twitter pretty heavily. Feel free to add me if you use it too.
I've been lurking here since last September. I'm glad I finally decided to jump in.
