Jumper Boxes

I have two what I call no name lithium jumper boxes. They were both Amazon purchases and around 120 each.

I used them the other day to start one of my older fun cars and one would not give me any juice to the battery and the other would only give me juice for about 15 seconds at a time. I was not cranking the car but rather trying to use power to keep it in neutral. (This car that will remain un named requires 12v power for a solenoid to release even in neutral)

I am used to the old school jumper packs that are always giving juice when they are hooked up and turned on.

Are all the newer generation of lithium jumpers like this where they give power for a short period of time?

What are the recommendations for those that give power the whole time it is connected without cutting out every so many seconds?

Any that I've used.

They also have circuit protection built in, IIRC you can't use them on a flat/missing battery

You'll want a lead acid battery jump box for constant power.

If its a fun car, why are you not naming it?
We dont kink shame here

Use a battery or a power supply or an old school charger.

Most have a feature that allows them to jump a flat dead battery. My NOCO does--if I can remember the secret code.

Now that you say that, I think it flashes an error and then you have to hold a button to bypass the safety.

Should probably look that up, or toss the manual in the center console. Odds are they day I need it I'll be out of cell service area

Since you asked Rolls Royce…

Trying to avoid the pokes I may get…
Have you swapped a 5.9 Cummins into it yet ?

I have a 2-wheel hand cart setup with three big batteries that I use as a jump pack on the farm. It’s not the most convenient but it’ll crank something long enough to melt the starter before they’re dead. I plug a trickle charger onto them when I’m done and they’re ready for next time.

I have a Noko and if you hook it up to a dead battery with no appreciable voltage, it won't work automatically.

It will work, but you have to put it in a bypass mode.

I bought one big enough to jumpstart my 67 Cummins but yet I've only used it to jump my lawnmower several times. I did have to put it in bypass mode to get it to work because the battery was so flat.

A place I worked at (heavy duty truck shop) many years ago we had two very large batteries on a dolly. Need to jump the completely dead Pete with a large Cat… no problem. Would like one of those but not really feasible for me.

Ha Ha no 5.9 swap.

When you're done, can you please pass the grey poupon?
This one does not have the table in the back. My old one I had did. Pretty cool feature and at the shows I would put a jar on the back.

Those of us that lived in the 80’s will never forget those commercials.

I should add by some of the replies here these new generation packs seem to be useless.

Cant jump a battery that is too dead… WTF.

Wonder if they are trying to protect the jumper box more than do the job they should.

They're trying to protect their investors from lawsuits. The boxes these days have (and have had for many years) a circuit that prevents the relay inside from closing if the polarity is reversed. With a 100% dead battery, there is no polarity to detect.

But, as I mentioned above, most do have some way to defeat this "feature" for those of us who can figure out complicated things like black-black and red-red.

Very helpful comment. Thanks
