Junction box for exterior lighting

Hello,

The contractors have started siding my new garage. They put up j blocks for the siding but there is currently no electrical junction box in the garage. When I wire up the lights, what type of junction box do I need?

A standard round new construction type mounted to a 2x cross member?

I'll attach a picture that might help me clear up for my lack of knowledge. You can see the j blocks at the tops of the doors.

Thanks,

Tell them to take those blocks down and use something like this.

It looks like they have the blocks outside ..... Inside you would wire the lights back to a switch box?

How much power do you have in the garage?

My first garage had two 20amp feeds -- one did the door openers and a couple outlets and the other did the lights and a couple outlets - one outside.

The style that Bert has suggested has the box built in. No need for any other boxes. the style that looks like they installed on your garage should of had a box mounted on the surface of the garage first, I use a metal octagon 1 1/2" deep. Then put a 4" hole in the j-block before installing it. this will expose the box and mounting screws, but the box will still be recessed in the block. If you look inside the j-block before installing it, you will see the scored marks for round and rectangular. Your electrician should have had the boxes mounted before siding began. Screwing the light fixture just to that plastic block is not the proper way. Siding contractors are not electricians

Terry,

That you for the info. I pictured the box being mounted inside the garage flush with the exterior osb. It sounds like there is a shallow box available for surface mounting and just pull the romex through the back of the box.
I should have mounted the boxes up first, but I should be able to do after I cut a hole in the jblock to fit the box. I guess that's why I'm an amateur.

I just did this on my garage. Added the boxes afterwards.
Here are some pics.
