I have a gearwrench tool kit & a tool bag with screwdrivers, wrenches, pilers, and a few extra ratchets and a such

I was want to see what u guys take & please do not say u only take the only tools for the job , as there are many times. I go for one thing ,and find more things i need/want when I get there. I understand the pack light, but I leave most in the truck, and end up going to the truck for the tools needed!

I was looking for a all in one kit!

generally, if i'm headed to the junkyard, i'm after something specific, and take the tools i need, to get what i need.

in addition i usually take a complete set (std & MM) of 1/4" drive sockets, 3/8" dr ratchet, drive adapters, set of 1/4" bits, (slotted, phillips, torx, square), ratcheting screwdriver, med sized hammer, long heavy screwdriver (mostly for use as a pry bar), set of combo wrenches, 4" or 6" adjustable wrench, pair of channellocks, a sharp scraper/putty knife, pocket knife, and a pair of good wire cutters.

Good recommendations already. I'm going to add: short, heavy drillers hammer, a hacksaw and a good prybar. Remember that you are shopping at a junkyard. The prime part you really want may have a fender partially wrapped around it or you may be dealing with hoods or doors that won't open properly. Sometimes a little more force is necessary to get the parts you need (just don't damage something that someone in the future may need).

The best tools on my junkyard bag are 3/8" Craftsman sockets in a blow mold case. I try not to take anything that i don't mind loosing. Now the last time I dropped my bag on the scale it was 34lb! I have a roll of std and metric combo wrenches, channel locks, half dozen screwdrivers, hammer, 1/4" sockets and nut driver handle, wire cutters, hex & torx keys, hacksaw blades, buck knife, vice grips, zip ties, sharpie and wd40. I'm sure there are more things I've forgot, I also keep a breaker bar in the car.

Cordless sawsall a couple spare batteries and a couple spare blades.

Past that a like 20 piece socket set and a 8 piece gear wrench set.

If you can't get what you need with that then you're not trying hard enough.

I take tools in my son's old backpack. It leaves both hands free to carry more items. And just take whatever tools I need. I use to take a plastic toolbox and a dolly but there is always some **** in the way so I had a old Batman backpack sitting in the house and thought "That leaves two hands free" and been using it for years.

I only take the tools to do the job.

Seriously, somebody had to say it! :bounce:

I tend to take too much, but then I'm a chronic overpacker, and can get away with taking too much, 'cuz big ol' bubbas make good pack mules. You should see how much junk I have in my survey vest. :(

All of the above plus a flex knife for pulling glass, big hunk of brass for pulling steering wheels, tin snips, full set of SAE and metric wrenches, plus some doubles in 3/8 1/2 & 9/16 in short dog bones & the biggest hammer that will fit in the bag. Been stripping muscle cars for 25 years. Anyone can restore them, but it takes a real man to cut one up.... Lol ...ugh, Genius I'm not!

I have a tool bag in the truck, that goes with me to the yard. If I know I'm going to need some thing specific, I bring that along too. It started out as a Cman 40 piece kit in zippered soft side case and I built it from there.

I've got a tool roll made by SWMBO from a leg of my old jeans, adn it had a #2 phillips, a 1/4" straight blade an 8" crescent a handful of duplicate wrenches in the most common sizes, an old inside door handle clup release tool for fords from my Rachero/Falco/Tbird picking days, an Allen Key set, and some other odds and ends.

I HATE carrying more that I absolutely have to, particularly since carrying a bucket of tools I rarely used wound up helping to give me "tennis Elbow" in both arms, that i still fight occasionally.

I also would bring the bucket of tools and a hand truck that I would come back for if I needed something else... The hand truck was also handy for heavy parts if I needed it.

Lots of good suggestions here. I like the backpack idea. I will admit that I haven't been to a junkyard in over 35 years when I bought a 331 hemi-headed Chrysler engine. :D

But I spent many years traveling many miles to service medical equipment as a factory rep. So it was important to have what I needed. Like others have said, look at what it is you are generally searching for and then fit the tools to the job while not overdoing it. When I traveled I could always spot the inexperienced traveler carrying a whole house full of goodies for a weekend. :)

With a little experience you'll probably figure out the best mix of tools. And don't beat yourself up if you don't always have what ya need occasionally.

Not exactly the junkyard, but my serpentine belt broke on my 96 GMC Suburban when I tried to leave work. Walked down to the auto parts store and picked up new belt, grabbed the tools I keep in the truck, and presto, new serpentine belt! A monkey could do it, but I love the fact that I had a ratchet with me.

1/4 and 3/8 drive sets, a Matco magnetic tip screwdriver with Phillips, regular & common size Torx bits in the handle, vise grips, wire cutters, an assortment of metric wrenches and a BFH. It's all in a small leather carry bag which is always in my truck no matter where I'm going. If I'm after something specific at the junkyard I might throw in a few other things as well.
