thanks for the reply. I might do ready mix but I got to thinking about maybe doing my own. I need 4 1/2 yards but I can't figure out how many bags to a yard.

It depends on the particular bags you are using. They all say how many bags per yard on the bag itself. Best thing is to go look at the options and read the bags.

Using the numbers above where one 60lb bag equals .45 cubic feet, that makes it 2.22 bags per cubic foot. There are 27 cubic feet in one yard son 27 times 2.22 equals about 60. You will need 60 bags per yard or if you need 4.5 yards you will need 270 bags.

If access permits I suggest hiring one of those companies that mix the concrete that comes out of the chute. It will be cheaper than quickrete and you won't break your back.

Quikcrete has a calculator on their website based on sq.ft., 4" or 6" slab, 60# or 80# bags:

http://www.quikrete.com/Calculator/Main.asp

Here is another calculator:

http://www.concretenetwork.com/concrete/howmuch/calculator.htm

Food for thought if doing it on your own. 4.5 cu yds. = 121.5 cu.ft. so based on that @ 4" slab you are doing about 365 sq.ft. average wheel barrow holds about 2.5 cu.ft. when your muscles are fresh. Thats about 50 loads. Its going to take quite a few loads just to get enough to work a small section at a time. For a job this big I'd really think about using ready mix. Your job will take around 265-275 60# bags HD price on 60# quikrete $2.64=$700.00 ready mix? about $100.00/yd

Mixing 4.5 yards of concrete is going to be very difficult and time consuming. I did a yard and a half one time simply because it was remote and I had to. It was aweful. Your back may be stronger.

oh ya, at that point, if you HAVE to do it your self go pick up the cheepest mixer you can and get someone to help you.
i have the HF 1.5cu ft that will just handle a 90# bag and that works pretty good

...Using the numbers...4.5 yards you will need 270 bags.
you might want to look at the price of 80 or 90# bags. last time i ordered a pallet the 90's were ~ $70 less per pallet load

good luck with the project
