I want to get his posted to assist with understanding what I have; a bit later I will post the backstory to honor the man who owned it - my longtime neighbor Bob Fisher. Thus far I think what I have is a 74lb (a guess from the stamping - I haven't weighed it yet) H-B, 3 "handling holes", SN# 9494? (might be a symbol before the 1st '9'...), H=8.00", W=3.25", L=19.50" (footprint is 7.375 W, 8.00" L). It appears to be 2-piece construction v. 3 piece. You input is appreciated. Here are initial photos:

If I have this right, your serial number 9494 was made around 1894+- 2yrs. If there is an 'A' preceding the number (A9494) then the date is likely approximately 1918 (A0 - A12000)

Oh .. Congrats!

I have a massive (460+ lbs) Peter Wright, and a much smaller Arm & Hammer (125 lbs) that was my wife's grandfathers. Welcome to the club.

I'll be attaching a few more photos shortly, but first, a bit about my neighbor whose widow sold me the anvil:

Bob (and later, wife/widow Linda) lived on our street since the mid-1970s. He was a number of years older than me, and a shop teacher at my old high school, though our times there did not overlap. He was a professional engineer, and had a successful private sector career before teaching. He'd built a large shop to house his huge tool collection and their 30-something ft motorhome. If I needed a toll, and didn;t have it, Bob did for sure! In the mid-80s, I got married, moved 45 minutes away, had kids, etc...my mom continued to live at the family home until she passed in 2019. I'd see Bob often visiting my mom over the years, and until his death from MS about 3 years ago, frequently as I began to revamp my inherited family home. Bob was always helpful, having spot-on advice and ideas for the project I was involved with, and generally a wealth of knowledge and an all around good guy. I miss him...Linda was glad I wanted the anvil as she knows when I use it, Bob will be on my mind.

I got it cleaned-up fairly well - brass wire wheel, then a coat of dry lube for now.

In trying to decipher the SN, the "mystery" initial marking (before the clear-enough "9494") appears it cannot be an "A" prefix. Perhaps a "2"? Also, is the appearance of the base construction reveal anything? Lastly, I cannot see an indication of this having a separate-material face - shouldn't it be fairly obvious if present?

Thanks for your advice.
