Hello fellow GJ people! I've been crawling the site for a while gathering idea's for my 21'x21' space. Currently it's a finished garage, but that's about it. No proper storage or anywhere to work on things. First leap is to build some cabinets and a bench area to line one of the walls. Here's some of my rough sketches.

However, this is an introductory thread. I'm just hoping to take some notes, meet some people, build off of what I've learned here and apply it to my own space.

ToMac: you might have better ideas than this and i do too, but two of these Costco racks for $150 each will solve a 20 foot wall's organizing area to fill up. or use two full size and have a workbench next to them.

anyway post your pictures again because they were not showing for me or if they are showing for you maybe my laptop just hadn't loaded them before i wrote this.

welcome to our group

welcome to our group

I fixed the URL's to the images, they should work now for everyone. I do have a few Costco racks but I chose not to go with them in the garage for a couple reasons.

1. I work for a plywood company and basically get free wood.
2. I don't really want everything exposed and prefer the look of a clean space with everything put away and out of sight.
3. I like to build stuff :)

ToMac: any of those reasons would have been good enough, but all three make it a no brainer. BTW you might want to put your location in your profile either city, state or area of the world you live in so in case you ask questions that are area specific we won't have to ask. not because we all want some free plywood.

if you do a bit of searching and reading i'm sure you'll get lots of ideas on how to set up your garage. i usually hang in old tools threads so hope to see you there or i do tend to move around because there is a lot to learn on most all parts of this forum.

cheers and if you are close i could use some 1.250 inch plywood. :lol_hitti

ToMac: about a 6 hour drive so maybe meeting halfway for some lunch in Portland and a vise for plywood trade might be on the schedule some day. I'm in Seattle.

welcome to the group and ask questions if you have any and we'll try to help.

cheers

Welcome to the GJ from Maine. Gotta love the "rough" sketches. Mine would be on a napkin and those would be my final drafts. Those racks that Drives posted are great, I have several of them and they will hold a lot of weight. If you put smaller heavier items on them, you should add plywood over the steel mesh, it works much better that way.

Thanks for all of the great welcoming messages fellas. Last night I threw down the money on a Dewalt DWE7491RS table saw. I really need the portability and wide ripping characteristics since I don't have a dedicated shop to have a saw laying around all the time. I went ahead and got a Diablo 80 tooth blade and Incra miter gauge to go along with it. I'm excited to start ripping boards!
