Just bought an IR TS4N5 Compressor

Well, finally did it, couldn't resist. A tractor supply near my house had a TS4 5HP/80 gal returned compressor priced at clearance. The prior owner stated the motor was blown and that this was the second TS4 he had where the motor burned out. The tractor supply guys called IR and were told he had too small a power wire going to the compressor.

Two questions: What size wire and what size breaker do I need to power this unit, and what should I look for that would be wrong with this motor. I removed the capacitor covers and took a look, nothing looked toasted. Would it be cheaper to have this motor repaired than buying a replacement?

Check if the motor has a plate on it. The plate usually lists the motor's specifications (ie. HP, RPM, AMPS, etc). My compressor's US Electric 5.0HP motor is listed as 22 AMPS according to the motor plate. I use 10 AWG wire, as I recall 10 AWG is generally rated to 30 AMPs (depends on exact type of wire and how wire is run ie. in conduit). I use a 30 amp 220 volt breaker. Not sure about repairing motors and the cost -check your local swap/sheet buy/sell paper. There might be guys selling decent motors for good prices. This is how I found my motor. I recall when I bought my motor that guys recommended getting a good quality motor. I think my US Electric is supposed to be good quality. There are other good quality motors...I hear Baldor's name quite a bit and see alot of good feedback. I am sure there are other good quality ones.

Might try contacting Eaton compressor & see if they sell just the motors. They list bare pumps on their website so it would be worth a try. I use 10 gauge wire & a 30 amp breaker on mine & have no problem. They draw more current at startup than while running for instance mine draws 45 amps peak starting current then goes down to 19.5 amps while running.

I have an extra 5hp motor in my shop from an Eaton. Definitely not your average 5hp motor. 2x the size and weight of the so called "7.5" hp motors in your Home Depot compressors. Just do a search on eBay you can find new Baldor motors just make sure you get the right speed and a true 5hp motor will draw 20-25amps when running (per phase).

If the motor is a std NEMA frame motor you can buy the motor at many different places as they are dimensionally interchangeable if the frame size is the same ie NEMA frame 145T. You just have to get the rpm, voltage and enclosure info off of the nameplate. On some of the smaller and cheaper compressors they use special duty motors.

If the wire size is too small or too long it is possible the voltage drop was excessive which might have damaged the motor.

I think you will have to scroll way down the page to see it. Anyway if that is the right one it has the higher speed motor (3450 RPM) and isn't as quiet running as the 1140 and 1740 RPM compressors. btw, that is the compressor I have and I don't much care for the noise it makes.

I believe that unit the ts4n5 is a high rpm compressor which IMO isn't much good. I have a couple of Eatons and would put them up against anything. They are TRUE hp and have SLOW pumps for long life and quiet operation. You just can't get that quality at the box stores.
