I’ve been scouting around for a 3/8” 6 point metric socket set. I was on eBay last week and saw a shrink-wrapped Matco set (7mm-19mm deep) for $69 (plus $15 shipping). I thought that was a terrific buy. Only two minor reservations here:

1) These are impact sockets, and I already have a full set of 1/2” impact sockets (deep & shallow) for my 1/2” impact wrench. I was originally looking for a 3/8” chrome set, since impact sockets are a bit thicker and I’m worried about clearance issues.

2) This Matco set is made in Taiwan.

But even with those two reservations, I thought the deal was just too good to pass up, so bought the set this weekend. Should arrive later this week. Let me know what you guys think.

Are those re-branded gear wrench sockets? I can't re-call

That set is around $86 on Matco's web site also. So not really a deal but maybe Matco doesn't have free shipping either IDK

I haven't had much issue with clearance using 3/8 impact sockets except on the smaller sizes and then I usually need to use 1/4 anyways. If you like them then they're worth it for you, if you think you over paid then you can try returning them or post them for sale on eBay. Personally I don't buy much from matco because it's all rebranded and mostly Taiwan so I can get a better deal from tekton or sunnex

You overpaid. There's plenty of other Made in Taiwan options out there that are cheaper. At that price point, I'd look for a used USA made set.

The GW impact socket sets were Made in China the last time I checked at a brick and mortar store. There should be a few threads on the forum that say the Matco pinless are made in USA and the GW ones are made in China. Apparently there is a significant quality difference for the swivel impacts.

Those look like the ADV line, you didnt save a ton of money but still plenty good quality and pretty deep which is nice.

The ADV sockets are identical to the Sunex & Napa sockets. They do have a different chamfer supposedly. Fair deal for what it is. Very good impact sockets either way.

Are these GW rebadges, like the impact swivels are?

GW/armstrong/craftsman/matco all had the same usa made pinless at one time. GW is no longer producing them in the usa, x-core or whatever is imported; and perportedly not as good. CM doesn't carry them anymore.

Matco currently doesn't list COO on the website as far as I can tell.

If they work for you, great. My biggest issue, if it was me, is that I try hard Not to buy tools made in the pacific rim if there is a domestic alternative.

Use them and enjoy.

Regardless of anything else, they are good sockets. I can vouch for that and the price you paid is good

I work on Class 8 Diesel trucks I have had several Matco ADV 3/8 sets I bought during BOGO deals I have never had a issue with them. I could have gotten another brand maybe cheaper (not sure because BOGO) but I have had a business relationship with my Matco dealer for 20 years so I get decent prices.
