Just Finished My First Vise Restore

Long time lurker first post. I found this 1947 Baby Bullet Wilton Vise and wanted to show some before and after pics. A special shout out to Kevin at WVP for help and advise!!!

Beautiful job! I want to find a rusty bullet just like that one for a future restoration project. I have a small auxillary bench that it would be perfect for. What color paint is that?

Rustoleum Verde Green Hammered Look

Apparently these vises were painted a battleship gray. But later Wilton started using a green very close to Verde Green.

Are the jaw inserts new, or are those old ones that you shined up ???

Also, gotta tell us what you paid the severely rusted condition . . . . you may have well-deserved YS award for first post !

Great job on the vise! The top of the jaws look to have a surface ground finish and the color is fantastic!

Nice job on the vise. like the before and after pics, they really help show the difference. It really turned out nice. Now I wish I hadn't painted mine Rustoleum red...

And...thank you for not posting "before" and "after" pictures of the cookies.

Thanks everyone for the props. The base clamp levers were too far gone and the jaw inserts were as well. That is where Kevin at WVP came in, the after pics of the jaw inserts and levers are his fabrications. The vise body and dynamic jaw were wire wheeled and dremeled. I hit the end cap the wrong way with a wooden dowel, thus causing a dimple. I pounded out as much as I could. Last night I saw a post where someone put a pic of a baby bullet someone was selling on eBay a while back and it showed the cap was painted the same color as the body, so I painted it with the Verde Green as well.

I paid 70.00 for it. Farmers kids selling old stuff out of his barn as he had passed away recently. They said he had it as long as they could remember and the date code on the dynamic jaw says "52" so I suppose it was made in 1947.

As for knowledge of grinding and repainting, I used to be into restoring old Snapper Lawn Mowers and learn a lot doing that. Best thing was to use Rustoleum self etching primer after cleaning rust off and then painting 3 coats of paint.
