Hope this is helpful to somebody, it isn't in the garage, but it would work in a garage just as well.

We had an addition put on the house, and we needed some extra storage space for small projects. It seemed there was always something scattered out on the computer desk, coffee table, kitchen table, spare room floor, etc.

I'm sure the same conditions exist in peoples garages... A half torn down carb on one bench, a broken chair being glued and clamped on another, etc.

So I came up with an idea for a tower of different size drawer trays that are big enough to be used as individual table top trays. Each tray is 24" x 24" and from 3" to 6" deep. Here's a drawing I did in Adobe illustrator. the closet itself ias 12' wide, 34" deep, and goes from 12' tall down to 8' tall. there are 2 48" doors. The tower is made up of 3/4" plywood... They had a special on paint grade AB plywood around Christmas, for $23 a sheet, so I bought a bunch.

Here's the finished tower in the closet, I put leather strap handles on each tray, so that a normal knob or handle wouldn't poke me in my ample belly.

One of shorter trays has a flip down side, so I can actually draw right in it, and rest my hand naturally.

My girlfriend makes semi-precious stone and sterling silver jewelry and repairs watches, so the shallow drawers let her start and stop without leaving tiny little containers of beads (or parts) out where the dogs tail can fling them across the room (I think she made a couple new 4 letters words the day that happened).

The deeper drawers will hold model car projects. The bottoms of the drawers are nice smooth masonite that was not glued in... if they get to gunked up with glue or paint, pry one end off, cut up another piece and nail it back together.

The other end of the closet will hold LPs, 45s (we have a jukebox), books, video tapes, and craft supplies. I just finished the trays Sunday, so the boxes of **** have not been emptied onto the shelves. The top shelf is 80" off the floor, the same height as the tower.

I'm looking forward to actually using this thing. It'll sure will be nice having a tray that I can disassemble small things, and not have to worry about losing parts, put it away and come back to it when you have time, instead of blocking out X hours to start and finish a project because there isn't enough room to have it sit out while I do something else, or i needs cleaning up each time it's worked on. I can decide what to work on instead of space deciding.

Of course your trays could be made of cheaper wood (mine is 1x4 and 1x6 fir, stained to look a little more like funiture), or brake bent sheet metal to be a little more resistant to chemicals.

Helpful, Y or N?

Wow, that's an awesome idea. I could sure use something like that too. More for in the house than in the garage for me too though. There's no way I could build it though. Most of my tools right now are for working on cars & metal, but some day I'd like to do some tinkering with furniture and woodworking. Really great idea though. It would definitely help to keep me from mixing up my piles/projects, and keeping everything organized.

Great idea. I've been thinking of different ways to get one of my closets organized, and I think you've found the solution.

Nice work!

We are dying here with too many projects no room and no organzation. Do you have any plans for one that a whole house, camper and 4 vehicles will fit in?
