A package containing my first Proto tool purchase just arrived here at the office. I got into a situation where I needed some larger sockets (my Snap-On 1/2" drives go to 1 1/8"). I was going to order from Snap-On, but I could not justify the price for as little as I am going to use them, so based on recommendations from this board, I ordered 1 1/4", 1 5/16", and 1 1/2" 12 pt regular chorme Proto's from MSC.

I am quite impressed with the finish. Not Snap-On, but much better than expected. They are definitely on par with the other truck brands I have used, very much a quality piece.

MSC's shipping is first rate, too. Ordered yesterday, have them today via UPS ground.

I am very much looking forward to using them. I will definitely be looking to buy Proto stuff in the future as a quality, lower cost alternative to the truck brands.

Proto seems to be a sleeper on ebay. You can get some really good deals if you shop around some.

I'll get flamed for this, but my large Proto sockets have served me better then the Snap-ons.

I'll keep Ebay in mind for future Proto purchases. It happened that I needed a 1-5/16" ASAP, so I had to buy new. I just wanted to share my positive opinion with the group.

I've been in that spot before. That's the reason my toolbox has so many different brands in it. Where ever or who ever I could get a good tool from that's where it came from. Didn't care much about brand just needed the job done.

I've got some Proto sockets and they're very nice; the chrome ones even have the insides painted silver. :)

I never thought about it before, but I think you are right about the silver paint. Most of their sockets are pretty nice.

I found a nearly complete set of 1/2 drive deep SAE sockets that were almost new. I got them from a pawn shop cheap, since I don't think they were familiar with the Proto brand. :) I also got a nice Proto breaker bar and several large 1/2 drive shallow sockets as well. I kick myself though because they had several others that I passed on because they were duplicates.

Definitely a sleeper at the flea markets, too; look for Plomb, P&C and Proto; all the same manufacturer with different names changed over the years. I have gotten Proto 1/2" drive dyna ring impact sockets for as little as 50 cents apiece! Good stuff, IMHO!
